Anyone rented a car needing baby seats, got to the desk and been told they don't have them? I'm coming from Canada and don't want to bring them if I can help it. Thanks.
Yes, it happened two years ago to my sister and brother in law at the airport in Rome.
They'd organised car seats with the rental agency etc, but when we arrived - guess what - no car seat! The agency knew they wanted and needed a car seat, there just wasn't one there.
Unfortunately, I don't remember what happened next. All I could suggest would be to check, double check, and check again with the agency before you leave.
A close friend who lives in London with a wife and baby goes to Rome a couple of times a year. EVERY time they have gone he has never been able to find a car seat with a rental car.
They have a stroller that turns into a car seat, that turns into a high chair that turns into bed that turns into a mp3 player (just kidding about that last one). That really struck me as the smartest idea. Multi-tasking kiddy stuff.
You are going to need a stroller, the stones of Rome are rough. Get a good one, it will be easier on your littlest passenger. I remember one day running into this 3 year old going oooooooo only it was o bump o bump o bump. The kid was right - it was fun!! I bumped along in my wheelchair and did the same thing. But the stress of dealing with Rome's accessability issues and curbs with a cheap stroller is one more thing you DON'T need.
Here's the question - if you arrive and there is no car seat what are your options? Pay walk up car rental prices? Drive without the kid in a car seat? NOT!! Go into Rome and buy a car seat? That sounds like fun. I realize that the LAST thing you want to do is horse a car seat. But if you can get one of those multi-use car seat/strollers you will find it luggage well worth hauling.
Hi, It could be a good idea to bring a car seat with you if you want to drive. Even they have it, it migth be too small. We used a reserved car seat with a private car transfer and I had hard time to secure it. It looks like it is done for smaller kids. My son was 18 month and this year he was 2.5 years old. Next year we plan on driving and will bring his car seat.
Steve, You also mention baby seat, is it 2 baby seta that you need or a baby seat and a child seat?
If you buy a plane ticket for a baby (up to 2 years) you will need a baby car seat on the plane as well. However if you need 2 child seats or have the baby on the lap in the plane, there are some folding models like Compass, this one is a booster, or there are some models that are lighter or if you have a bag to protect them if you check them in. Some bags are like rucksacs, so you can have free hands.
