As a family of 6, I am looking for a restaurant in Orvieto that is reasonably priced for our lunch. Kids(17,15,13,11) will probably eat pizza or simple pasta, but are adventurous in their choices. I have read many restaurant reviews, but I can't afford a big bill for our lunch. We may even picnic if someone can direct me to a market---ahh, I bet I can find that if I need it.

Also, anyone know the cost of the underground tour? Do you think kids would like it? They do have history interests.

Yes, the tour's pretty interesting. The cost is €5.50 regular, €3.50 for students. Source here in Italian.

Teresa: We ate two great meals there, but neither was inexpensive. I'm writing to say that I LOVE picnics. They always are a hit, especially with views like Orvietto has. You won't have any trouble finding some place to buy picnic items. I envy your kids! Really, this is great that you're taking them, and they seems like they're "easy." Wow, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old who are easy!

Enjoy

We had lunch at a cafeteria in Orvieto that was just a couple of blocks from the Duomo. The food was quite decent and very reasonably priced. I just wish I could remember the name of it or in which tour book I found it. Can anyone else help?

If it is any help, here's the view looking back at the Duomo as we were walking towards it.

A few years ago while in Orvieto we stopped in a “tavola calda” (Italian for hot table) to have a mid-afternoon snack with a glass of wine. We found this place www.hescanas.it in the Piazza del Duomo. As I recall it had a terrific selection of ready-cooked things to eat so our snack grew into almost a full lunch as everything we tried was delicious. A tavola calda would be an ideal place to inexpensively satisfy the appetites of all those young people.

If you are not already familiar with what a “tavola calda” is, I think you might find these ideal for economizing while enjoying very good food. Here you will see an example of the typical foods that a tavola calda offers: http://tinyurl.com/2uaybm

The tour's fun; here are my notes. I've eaten some good meals in Orvieto, none expensive but none cheap, either.
