We won't have a car while staying in Positano but will rent one for the remainder of our trip in Umbria and Tuscany... looking for advice as to whether we should train to Assisi area and rent car there or rent car in Naples (or elsewhere?) and drive. Thanks in advance!

Welcome — and give us more information. How many of you are there? If you are ten, by all means rent the (large....) car in Positano and drive across the country. If you're just two, it will be far cheaper to take the train. Other factors as well; sorry therefore to be so vague!

You might want to read this thread about car rental (or lack thereof) in Assisi itself. Looks like your best bet would be to take the train to Perugia to rent a car, if you're going the "train" route. Else perhaps rent the car in Positano or Sorrento.

If you rent in Naples at the airport, you'll pay the airport rental surcharge. Unless you can find a convenient Naples car rental location very near the highway, I would not recommend going into the centre city area to get a rental car. Driving in central Naples itself is best avoided if possible.

We are doing almost the same thing this May. We will be in Positano for three days and a week in Sarteano in Southern Tuscany. We struggled with which was the best way to go, and with all things considered, decided on renting a car in Sorrento and driving. When we added up the train tickets it was cheaper to just go ahead and drive. Plus all the changing of trains with our bags just sounded tiring to me.

Thanks all for your responses; will avoid Naples and either rent in Sorrento or train to Perugia -- there are just 2 of use and more concerned with convenience than cost.... please let us know l&w about your experience when you return!

Looking at the thread KimC mentioned, note that some find Foligno preferable to Perugia for car pickup for this trip.

There is a new option for Assisi: you can rent a car from nearby Perugia's airport (Sant' Egidio) and they will bring it to you in Assisi for an additional charge of about 20 Euro
