Hello all, So, only one month before we leave to Italy for our honeymoon, we are beyond excited! We are attending an opera performance at the Teatro alle Terme di Caracalla, an outdoor performance, so I am not sure what to wear, actually more unsure of what my fiance(husband then) would wear, do you think a nice shirt with tie will do without a jacket? It will be in July, and we just have regular seating. For me, I am just thinking of going with a dress skirt or pants with a nice top. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know how much to expect to pay for a taxi at night from the Baths back to our apartment near Piazza Barberini?
I have never taken the taxi back from the baths, but if need suggestion on how to get back on the buss combined with the Metro, I can help. We visited the baths in Feb. We took bus 160 there from near Ponte Palatino. You can get pretty close on the Metro by getting off at the Circo Maximo stop.

Thanks dragonpat, I thought the buses don't run that late, but I just read that they run until midnight, and after that the notte buses take over.Question: is it still safe to ride the bus that late, I am thinking the opera performance might be done at 1100 pm or later?
We have ridden on the buses and the metro as late as 10:30 pm. Nobody bothered us. it was winter. we hardly even saw anybody. This night bus map doesn't show as far south as the baths of Caracall, but I am sure I got this time from the ATAC Rome transit site http://www.slowphotos.com/photo/showphoto.php?photo=38676&cat=4131 is says that night buses don't start till 12:30 pm

I went to the opera at Caracalla last summer and it was pretty casual. What you describe sounds fine.
We took a cab there from Largo Argentina and the fare was about 5 euro. You could easily walk back to Barberini—not far and on a summer night it could be nice.
dragonpat, thanks for thr link, I am sure I can use the info. Robroma, appreciate the reply, we would most likely end up walking, just like to know my options in case.
Walk, really? I love walking around Rome but that's got to be four or five kilometers, isn't it? The most direct route would involve going up and down several hills. A flatter route is somewhat longer. Seems like a long walk late at night. (Or maybe I'm just getting old and lazy!)

Yeah, I think so myself Ellen. Here is an attached graphic with the nite routes near the Baths of Caracalla. If it is not too late you can walk to the Circo maximo Metro stop. Take that to termini and then switch to the other line at Termini and get off ab Barberini. If it is after midnight, you could walk to near the Circo Maximo Metro stop and get on night bus 40 and take that to Termini. When you get to Termini you coudl take another night bus to Barberi, or walk from Termini.

The ATAC site shows that many of the night routes have changed this year; some of them start running at 11.30. I tried charting routes with a midnight departure: from viale delle Terme di Caracalla, they have you walk 1.5 km to S. Giovanni to catch bus N1. With a Circo Massimo starting point, by FAO, they have you take a variation of line 8 (LINEA 8 Andata Prolungata Temporaneo), with an evening schedule starting its last run at 12.30, to Manzoni, and changing to N1. If it's before 11.30 (or 1.30 on Friday or Saturday night), you can take the metro from Circo Massimo to Termini, but line A to Barberini stops running at 10 and is replaced by a bus; you could walk that segment or find a cab at Termini to feel safer. A quick look at an announcement says that that night bus N2 basically follows the route of metro line B, and line N1 takes the line A route.
This was written at the same time as Pat's; the night line numbers have completely changed and I've had trouble finding a new map, but a PDF in Italian describing the routes is here.
Andrew, I tried to download a new night bus map at ATAC yesterday, but every time I tried to do that when I tried to open it with my home computer yesterday, as dialog window told me that my file wasw damaged and it wouold not open it. So I am afraid that I used the file i downloaded in late 2007.
It looks like night bus N9 in your attachment follows Metro line B and starts at Laurentina. if that is the case then you could walk to Circo Maximo metro stop and get to Termini that way.

N9 deviates from that line; it is really N2 that follows metro line B. You can enter N2 at Trova Linea on the ATAC home page, then select the first choice, destinazione Recanati. The first departures from Laurentina are at 23.51, 00.06, and 00.36.
We've been to two operas at Caracalla in July. Both times, it was on an extemely hot and muggy night. I would dress as cooly and comfortably as possible. No need to be dressy; a light skirt or dress for you and nice pants and shirt (no tie without a jacket!) for your husband would be fine. Never saw taxis after the opera so we ended up taking the bus back to the Pantheon area. I also think the walk back to Piazza Barberini is too far from the opera.

Thank you all for your help. Maybe it is too far to walk back to Barberini, especially if it is a hot night. We will be in Rome for couple weeks before the opera, so by then(hopefully) we are familiar with some of the routes and distances. So I think I will shoot for taking the metro to termini then walk or bus to Barberini if before 1130. If after midnight, I will try to get a cab first, if it fails, will take night bus 40 to Termini, just like Pat and Andrew suggested. You guys are great.
