In order to see the sistine chapel you have to go through the Vatican Museums.
Check out this thread from last week. It discusses some of the options.
Basically, if you can get an official tour, you can skip the line - but that seems to have a 1 in 3 odds, and you don't find out till later. There are companies that do tours for early admission. And for even more money, you can do an after hours tour.

BTW - I'm still hopefully waiting for my fax from the Vatican. Fortunately, the management of the apartment I'm staying at has a fax #... so I may be one of the lucky 1/3 to get the most cost effective option - the official tour.
If not, we'll go at 1pm, and hope for the best.

Well, don't do what I did in Nov of 2005! We trained it from Florence in the a.m., got to the Vatican around 12:30, only to find that the Sistine was closing at that very moment...and we were only there for the day. I not only felt STUPID, but I gave my sister a look of total disbelief and denial that she will NEVER forget.
Don't know why I thought I could get away without making advance reservations. Be sure to check whatever the Sistine's winter hours are!!

Check out the earlier thread mentioned. Also the winter hours for Vatican Museums usually start in late October/early November. This means significantly shortened hours from the already short hours that the museum is open to the general public.
