I'll spend the last 2 weeks of May in Sicily (at the Babilonia language school in Taormina), then I have the first week of June free before flying out of Rome. Any suggestions for spending a not too hectic week, ending up in Rome? I was thinking maybe to fly from Sicily to Rome, rent a car, then drive through Siena, other hill towns, return to Rome, but don't want to spend too much time on the road. Thanks
Well...not too hectic and I suppose not too turistic! Why don't you choose the country around Rome or the South of Umbria?...not too far from the Capital but nice and interesting enough to spend there a week. Take a look here or click here to find some good agriturismos! Good luck choosing. Corinna
Solotraveler, a good option would be a week in Rome itself. You can be as active or quiet as you like. Rome is a city of neighborhoods which are just delightful to roam around and practice your new-found abilities in the language. Driving alone is certainly not impossible, but it can be stressful both in the country and particularly in towns and cities. I'd forego the car for another trip when you have a fellow sufferer (oops, traveler), and have someone with you so that navigating is easier and getting lost (inevitable) is a shared experience.
