Hi,
My husband and I are planning a Dolomite hut to hut trip Aug. 30 through Sept. 16. There are so many options for hiking, we enjoy staying high in the mountains and strenuous is OK. We would like to backpack for 10 days in the Dolomites, have read about Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Sasso di Sesto circuit. Could anyone help with a 10-day trip, it would be OK to stay in a hotel mid-way but we prefer to not stay in many hotels, mostly huts along the way. Thank you!

Last time I trekked in the Dolomiti was back in 1989 so I can't give you any recent info but I can say be ready for very strenous hiking. I found the Dolomiti to be harder than the Himalayas, the Rockies, the Sierras, etc.

The huts are great. Good thing they are there, so you don't have to carry so much. Tough hiking though!

Must be a guide book that covers the various areas to hike, and how far it is to each hut, etc.

Hi, Chandi (Red Red wine)

First of all hiking in europe can hardly be called backpacking. It is just amazing! No sleeping on hard ground, no freeze dried food,
wine list? beer etc.

I have the hike for you. I am starting the hike Sept 1, which is about the same time as you, I am going with my wife this trip (Nepal alone). It is rated as one of the most scenic options and is about the right length for you. The Alta Via 1.

Dolomite website

Look under the high level walks of dolomiti tab for number 1

Buy these books

Stedman book

Cicerone book

PM me with questions. Check out my blog for some info on my Nepal and Italy hike plans.

I have reservations and am planning to do it on a short schedule of 9 days.

It is a point to point hike which does pose a slight logistical problem, but we have a plan which is take the bus(two connecting-Venice to cortina cortina to Debbiaco) to the start stay in Debbiaco. Hike to Belluno then train back to Venice.

We are staying in an apartment in Venice which at this point is the cheaper and more attractive option.

we did a hut to hut hike summer of 06 the Tour of Mt Blanc (see my trip report on my slowtrav page)
