My sister is coming to visit me in March and I dont know the answer to her question...she has a flight into Milan from Boston then l hour to catch her connecting flight to Rome. Does she have to pass customs in Milano? will she have time to catch the Rome flight? Life was much easier when there was direct Boston-Rome flights.

I connected through Milan once en route to Venice and did not go through customs until I got to Venice. All on Alitalia. Also had about an hour and that was plenty of time.
I connected through Milan last spring and did go through passport control in Milan but didn't go through customs until Florence. Although we were on Alitalia for both flights it was a fairly long walk from the international terminal to the Florence flight, but an hour should be plenty of time, especially if she is checked all the way through at the point of origin.

The key to changing planes in Milan is to book your luggage to the final destination even if you have a change of airlines. That way you just go to the transit desk and passport control. It will not take a lot of time. If however, your luggage only is booked thru Milan then you will need to go thru customs there and it will take a lot longer.
words of wisdom to live by from Stephen Sondheim's The Frogs {The chorus is singing a prayer to Dionysus...} Dionysius "A hymm to me, the god of wine..." Xanthius (His slave) "I thought you were the god of drama?" Dionysius "I am the god of wine and the god of drama. A little wine will get you thru a lot of drama"

She'll have to pass through both a security checkpoint and then through passport control in Milano.
If she has her boarding pass for the Milano-Roma flight, she should not go to the transit desk, but directly to the line for the security check. Then up the stairs, go to the left. Passport control will be in front of her. After passport control she can check which gate her flight leaves from. Then run.
