Hi,
I'm flying out of Milan next month, though not into Milan so I wouldn't know the answer from the beginning of my trip. I've heard that if you are an Alitalia passenger you can ride the Malpensa Express train for free. Has anyone heard of this and how to go about doing this?

Huh. In doing a bit of a Google search, I found that there was a 1999 promotion offering free service on the Malpensa Express--but there's no mention of it on the Alitalia or Malpensa Express websites. My guess is that it's been discontinued.

There is a train into the city and also a shuttle bus. The train does not go into the city center per se, but stops at the Cardorna station, which may not be convenient for you, so check where you are staying. The shuttle bus cost 5 euros last year (it goes up every year) and makes two stops--- the first being the feria, milan's convention center, and the second and last stop is at the central train station. To find the shuttle bus, exit customs and turn right. walk straight down the hallway, and you will see numbered doors to your left. the shuttle is at door 5 or door 6, and tickets are purchased from the driver while boarding. Train tickets are sold at a kiosk which you will find by walking jst as described above.Buses leave every half hour, but i think they added an additional company with staggered departures, so you should be able to get a shuttle every 15 minutes. It beats a cab ride which is about 80 euros. the trip takes 45 minutes.

Robert basically said it all. The only thing that I have to add is hat your departure point also depends on where you are staying at on your last night. If you are arriving from somewhere by train, than you will likely arrive in Milano Centrale, and from there the easiest route to Malpensa is by bus. If you are stauing in the center, Cadoprna station is tem minutes on foot from the Duomo, so that is the easiest choice (not the cheapest, but the fastest sine the busses are sometimes delayed by the heavy traffic). If you are by changche staying in Como lake, than you don't really have to get into Milano at all. The re are both busses that go directly to Malpensa, or you cantake the trainst departing to Milano from Stazione Como Nord Lago (right on the shore of the lake), get off the train in Saronno and take the Malpensa Express there.
