Sorry for the last minute post. I leave tonight for Verona (via Milan) and just realized we may need to buy train tix in advance since we are leading up to Easter. We need to take the train from Milan to Verona tomorrow and then return to Malpensa early Saturday morning for our flight back to the U.S.
Do you recommend purchasing tix in advance? The trip planning info on the site says Easter can be very busy, but we're technically leaving the country before Easter.
If I buy a ticket for tomorrow (Milan-Verona) and the bus hits traffic or other and I miss the train I reserve, do I have to buy another ticket?
At this point, I would not put myself through the contortions of buying tickets on the Trenitalia Web site. You're arriving tomorrow, the Wednesday before Easter. It's not the Easter rush yet, since not even Good Friday is a holiday in Italy.
But I would suggest that you DO buy your return train tickets (with seat reservations) on arrival in Milan. On the Saturday before Easter, everyone and his uncle in Italy will be traveling. (The holiday in Italy is the Monday after Easter.)
Easter is one of the biggest travel weekends in Italy. If it were me, I'd book on arrival in Italy, either at the station or at a Verona travel agency, well before the holiday.
"Contortions"?? I found the Trenitalia site to be quite straight forward and easy to use. Signed up and got email confirmation right away...seemed easy as pie.
BTW, for an online ticketless purchase, you have until one hour after a reserved departure to rebook at no charge; just keep your change code handy. You can purchase and Intercity ticket with no reservation, and it will be good on any IC train, or you can add a reservation later...if timing allows and you're not hustling to catch the train itself.
Some of us have no problems with trenitalia's website and others have nothing but problems. You never know which group you are going to fall into until you've tried it.
