I searched the Italy forum for a site to get info on potential train strikes, and came up with this one:

http://www.seekitaly.com/news/from_roma.html#strikes

Their schedule only goes to January 30, 2006. Does anybody know of a possibly better site?

Steph's Web site gives a link to this Italian Web site, which is the "official" word on strikes in Italy:

Thanks, Eloise. This site will serve 2 purposes:

1. Giving me the info I need and

2. Making me study my Italian! Big Grin

wow, this site really challenges my minimal Italian. I'm confused about what all the different dates mean!! I just want to know whether there are any strikes scheduled for these days and routes:

oops!! as I was saying,

May 7 rome-bologna-ravenna

May 9 ravenna-venice

May 20 florence-orvieto

May 25 orvieto-rome

and the site I was referring to is this one, given above: http://www.commissionegaranziasciopero.it/

Is there any chance someone could interpret for me??? Thanks so much!! Not Worthy

This Web site is Rome-based, but it also gives information about national strikes - in English!

Strikes are not as frequent in Italy as they are sometimes made out to be...

I prepared an involved explanation, and it was lost in a message board crash. Since I'm at work, I won't try to redo it now, maybe later, but if you're referring to trains, the only national strike showing is on May 6, 24 hours starting at 9 p.m. the night before (I prefer to put it that way, although the more prominent date listed is May 5; that date is fine before 9 p.m.)

Thanks too Eloise. I see on the site you suggested that, although it only goes up to today's date, it tells how to read the official Italian site I was struggling with.

The main thing I'd add to this explanation from What's On in Rome, is that if you do an advanced search (Ricerca Avanzata Scioperi), you can use the Settore line to select the type of strike that concerns you, such as the various Trasporto categories. Also on the first two lines you can limit by date, putting the day before the month. Run the search with the cerca button. Still, even with fluency, it's hard to tell which of these strikes will really stop service, since several unions operate independently. For example, for May 5 (starting late that day, mostly the 6th) there are boxes for national rail strikes called by the Sult and Cub Trasporti unions, but I don't know how big these unions are. There might be a strike listed in the Bologna district, and one can wonder how much it will affect trains that go through Bologna, which many important lines do. You can also search for strikes in the past, and learn patterns from past years of how often they were called and how many have the discreet "Revocato" (cancelled) message at the bottom of the box.

And just to go with all that, here is the Slow Travel page that deals with the topic.
