I'm the O'Papa (granpa'). She's the fifth... So yes, you were right to "picture" me at a different age bracket!

Of course it's a grandchild! Parents are much too cool to post photos of their kids. It's only we grandparents who throw false modesty to the winds! Wait till I figure out how to post a photo of Karlie with a dance from Nutcracker.

My NYTimes finally turned up --- at least yesterday's did. And there is an article in the Travel Section about the rebuilding of La Fenice.
Also, there was a GlobeTrekker last night featuring an English guy visiting Tuscany. I missed the Florence part but saw the rest. Not too bad.

I left out one little part of my activities. This morning I (inadvertently) started a small fire in my kitchen. I was making some Irish oatmeal (the last of the package) and it started to boil over. So I moved it off the flame, then started to wipe up the spill with a paper towel. Only I forgot to turn off the gas! Blushing Blushing Oh well, I threw the burning paper in the sink and that was that. No fire damage and the oatmeal was still good. Reminds me that I must check my kitchen fire extinguisher, which has probably not been replaced since we remodelled in 1987! M

in the US they were giving drive-by flu shots

I had seen an article about that too. A search on google brought up articles of clinics all over the country doing this. Go figure! I guess in Italy it would be "do it yourself" flu shots, since I've heard mothers frequently give injections at home to their kids there (is that true?)

I've already received 4 Christmas cards in the mail (who are these super-organized people?!) so I finally bought my Christmas cards yesterday. Now my project is to write them, address them, and mail them, hopefully before Christmas. But today's activity is a lot more fun than that...we're heading up into the Jemez Mountains to cut our tree in the national forest. I have posole to take along, hot mulled cider and the sister is bringing muffins. Unfortunately we won't have the winter wonderland as I don't think they've even had much snow at the higher elevations, but we'll soon find out. I love getting out in the mountains, so that alone is great, and looking down the forest roads for trees is always fun. Add posole, and well...I'm happy! Smile

Coffee But first things first...more coffee!

Ahem - this is supposed to be a countdown. I know you guys have fires and such going on but this is a historic moment:

SIX

(thanks for the reply Valerie - and yes, home shots are common. There is a woman in the village where my husband was born that gives shots AND takes blood pressure. She said she learned on her sister. Ouch.)

FIVE...
...golden rings?
I don't know what to say at historic moments! I'm so excited to be a part of SlowTrav history-making. I'd like to thank the Queen, Pauline, for making this happen. I'd like to thank the Academy...oh never mind...

FIVE!!

FIVE --- Valerie posted at the same time, so it is FOUR
But don't think beating the previous record holder (I mean beating the thread not beating the person who set it - and Karin, why are you not posting?) means that this one stops. We are going for the longest thread ever here.

Oatmeal - I am going to make oatmeal for breakfast!! We even have ripe bananas.

Congratulations, Pauline, The Queen and to all of us who are clearly now best friends! Now you can go and have your oatmeal. I prefer mine with buttermilk, but I have no morning sweet tooth. Probably my heritage.

( ok,so pancakes with maple syrup are an exception.)

We are making ravioli today. It is a December tradition in Mark's family. Mark's dad is in the hospital Frown so Mark is in charge. He is making the dough and filling in my dinky kitchen (you should see it - pretty thrashed.) Then we will take everything over to the parental unit's house and everyone will help to make the raviolis - 1200 of them!

It is raining and I am roasting a squash because I want to try to make some of the raviolis with squash and crunched up amaretti cookies. Have been summoned - need to add water to the dough!

Wow! Didn't take too long to beat the record.

Now we'll have to beat the record of this thread with another thread.

Jonathan: No, the TV version of "Dance" never made it to America, much to the annoyance of us Americans on the Anthony Powell message board. Sounds like brilliant casting, but I don't know how they could ever condense the million words, 300 major characters, etc., into, what, six hours? I reread all 12 volumes every two or three years, and always find more each time to amuse and edify me. There is an Anthony Powell Society and website based in London, which runs the yahoo-based message board. "Dance" is a work of art that provokes a certain amount of fanaticism amongst its devotees, of which I am, proudly, one.
But how about Simon Raven's "Arms for Oblivion?"

Jody - you should have heard him when he was kneading the dough. It sounded like he was running a marathon or something.

I think I need a new kitchen floor.

So, I have this ditzy party girl for a next door neighbor (we call her elephante.) One of her friends clomped up the walk at 4AM and banged on her door and windows for a half hour. I was just about to get up and ask, "has it ever occured to you that she maybe isn't home" when elephante did come home. So, I am cranking Joe Strummer with the bass turned up. Sweet revenge. Finally joining in! Not doing much today. Today will probably be spent on the internet and watching some good old american TV in English! Smile

Got to chat online with Danijela. Might give her a call today. She is Croatia for the month. Frown Frown Frown

Might meet up with my mom to go to Chriskindlemart. It is a xmass market in Bethlehem, PA. Very large with a lot of interesting xmass oriented items from around the world. Not to mention some good food as well. But, I am not so sure I will be able to fully enjoy the food. Frown I had my four wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday and I am still only eating very soft food.

Everybody keeps suggesting over the past few days to have pasta. Hell No! I love pasta, but I need a break no pasta for me this month at all! I have enough in Rome. This vacation is about philly cheese steaks, tacos, hot wings, cheesburgers, potato skins, etc., etc.

Last night was great. Friends of mine had a xmass party and the theme was mexican! Margaritas, Corona, quesadias, mexican pizza. We had a homemade ornament exchange (the ornament had to follow the theme). And played charades. Good times had by all!

I know what you mean Wink Grin But, unfortunately, I couldn't pig out the way I wanted. You had to see me complaining with the manager about the "light" filling of the quesadillas. Few little pieces of what looked like to be chicken, 4 little pieces of lettuces, something that tasted like cheese, and all this for $6.50. The pictures looked so 'yummy' that I couldn't resist. Should I thank the manager instead of complaining? I think so Big Grin Oh, if it is of some consolation, there was a drop of what seemed to be sour cream, which I skipped, of course. No harm done, I guess Big Grin

I just updated my profile, and admitted that my name is not actually Mallory but Marian. Don't even recall how I started using Mallory. Am not sure how it will show up on all the posts now.
