Snowing again today. I slept for a good chunk of yesterday and consequently feel pretty darn good today.
Chris is at church now and then he's stopping at Shop Rite on his way home for provisions, potato chips, pretzels, sour cream, proscuitto and bread (chips and dip during the day and ribollita and panini's for dinner).
Becky's working on her history report about Marco Polo and Sammi's watching TV. If I can get motivated, I'm going to clean my office, work on Christmas cards, wrap presents, and make a shopping list oh, and of course, watch the Jets.
I went out early this morning, amazed that the snow had already started. But glad to say my new car is coping with the snow pretty well so far. Got up my driveway on the first try!
Just bought my daughter Adrienne's Hanukkah present online -- a digital camera. Now I need to order something for my granddaughter. Adrienne recommended that I buy Karlie some sort of Barbie house. I've always hated Barbie, which is probably why Adrienne still adores her. I remember her at 12 sitting in her room having one huge Barbie wedding before she put them away for good. So -- what can I do that's useful. Watch a movie, I think I still have soup left over from when I was snowed in last weekend. Maybe a pot roast, if the meat thaws quickly enough. Too early in the day for scotch.

So nice to be snowed in. I mean it really.

is it really snowing? How much? Must be so magical and putting people in a really good mood for the holidays... The Italian news talks about a different mood this month ; hotels in NYC booked, people shopping, the snow etc.. Is this true?
We have more than a good mood today. We are in a GREAT mood! And I don't think only in America but around the free world.
I was finally ready to take my donations (clothing, shoes, housewares, etc.) to the Housing Works Trift Shop but it's snowing heavily and although the shop is only a couple of blocks away I am not in the mood of going out today to play Santa Claus and dragging my big bags on the snow. Instead I should start writing my Christmas cards before New Year's. Not everybody has a PC to receive e-cards.

Storm blew through around 3 this morning, started around 1:30 with high winds. We hadn't eaten our dinner until 11 PM so we were still up at 3, digesting the leftover osso bucco and small pizza we ate. Today I am gong to continue with the second part of our trip report, do some cards and put ornaments on the tree. I did the lights last night. I think it will be a tree in procces. So I am off to the TR section to see what I can come up with for the Mediterranean part of our trip. CinCin for now Wendy Hope everybody has a terrific second to last Sunday before Christmas and when does Hanukkah begin? Cheers

Wendy, Hanukkah begins the night of the 19th. Mmm. Latkes and sufganiyot.
Busy day. Spent the morning substitute teaching 2nd grade Sunday school, which was a lot of fun; went to Whole Paycheck (sorry, Dean ) for much-needed groceries; and am now fighting with my computer to scan and enlarge some illustrations to make a flannelboard. Big pot of chili on the stove; kids and Larry in front of the tube cheering on the Pats.
It started snowing around an hour ago. Guh. Need to drive Evan to a birthday party. Oh, Larry can do it!

First snowstorm of the year in Toronto, about 10 cm. of the fluff (3-4 in.?). The first one always throws the city in chaos, until everybody (well, almost everybody...) remembers the good, old reflexes and how ABS and traction control work (and snow tires, if you are not cheap and keep on the all-seasons).
Had to go to our son in the midst of the storm, before sanders, salters and plows (sounds just like a law firm: "Sanders, Salters and Plow"!) came out and it was pretty touch and go (didn't touch...). By early afternoon, when I drove my Dad to his apartment, traffic was totally normal; the city did a great job.
To all who didn't know that Doru is a man (this really doesn't sound right; too Schwarzeneggerish!), I accept it as a compliment. Just a testimony to my evident sensitivity and happy to be counted among the best (and sucking up to the majority...).

We had about 4 inches on the ground before it turned to rain; now it's a slushy mess.
It's good for a holiday setting but reminds me I haven't been out of my house for two weekends now - I'm sure the retailers don't appreciate that .
So I'm such a slug - slept for almost 3 hours this afternoon, so I didn't wrap any presents or bake any cookies (did manage to make some chocolate chip banana bread though) or send any holiday cards.
Now I need to take a shower and dress for my book club's holiday party but first I need to vaccuum the floor downstairs - we had a chip and dip festival during the Jets game while we decorated the tree and I swear Sammi left half the chips on the floor.
Guess I'll catch up on my reading here then get going. See y'all tomorrow.
I've just been outside shovelling that lovely white stuff from my sidewalk and the driveway. Yesterday afternoon, just in the nick of time as it turns out, I invested in four snow tires in anticipation of driving to Quebec City for Christmas and a wedding reception at a nearby ski resort. Couldn't believe how expensive they were, but decided that they were cheaper than risking the possibility of an accident on a country road. (Had planned to buy just two front tires, but the garage owner convinced me that small cars need four. Never can tell whether these guys are honest or not, but I decided that "in for a penny, in for a pound".) Normally the highways are cleared promptly and are no problem without snow tires, but back roads can be tricky. As a teenager, I lost control of my brother's brand new car descending an unexpectedly icy hill in Quebec in April and luckily landed the car upright at the bottom. Could live without that type of experience happening to me again.
it snowed last night here in chicago. not much, maybe 1/2" but it makes everything nice & pretty.
i just had my friends over for our french "tea party". i made soup and bought baguettes from my favorite bakery. i also served epoisses and mimolette cheeses (imported; i didn't dare sneak those smelly cheeses home!), tapenade & foie gras (from the paris markets!). my friends brought quiches and another brought salad with chevre chaud.
for drinks we had cassis syrop & san pellegrino, then onto kir royales and beaujoulais. i made madeleines for dessert and with that i served a nice lemon tea from mariages freres.
and best of all, i brought out the different macarons from laduree that i bought last month, then froze for this occassion. the drink we served with the macarons was a muscat wine we bought in beaumes de venise last year.
all in all, it was a wonderful time enjoying all the food we brought home with us and also sharing trip pictures and memories from our paris & burgundy trip last month. it was sunshine on an otherwise cloudy day! tina

Just back from a walk in the snow with Frasier (yes, there was supposed to be a Nials [sp.?] too, but then I went on the world Titanium markets speculating towards my two artificial hips, so Nials never happened…).
Frasier is a snow freak. He eats it, drinks it, bathes in it and generally behaves in a very undignified manner when there is snow.
The plus for me is that I can pick easier his poo against the bright white of the snow.
Snow, and winter, have lost their charms on me since I don’t ski anymore, and the world is fraught with slipping and sliding perils. But the first snow remains my most loved day of the year, because everything is so, well, pure. And white. And bright. For a couple of hours, at least.

Woke up. Drove to the Disney outlet to buy gifts for assorted rugrats. Went to Grandma's. Ate at Tony Roma's with Grandma Came home. Turned on tree lights and rerun of That 70's Show.
On to more interesting topic: Things to look forward to in 2004.
Trip to Spain South by Southwest Music Conference Hopefully Doru's Trip Report Moving into bigger house with a yard so I can plant, and kill a garden Chow! Rome....
Snowed yesterday and Dan couldn't play golf. He was in quite a funk over that, but especially over Dusty. So I had to keep him busy to keep him from driving me crazy. Set up a 6 ft artificial tree in our family room and made him light and decorate it all by himself. I assigned him all of the sentimental family ornaments and the collection of antique blown glass ornaments for that tree. We also have a 10 ft live tree set up in our great room, which I decorated. It is our "party" tree, so it is decorated in an excruciatingly coordinated, rigid color scheme of deep midnight blue and antique gold. The angel on the top of the tree is dressed in blue and gold. The streamers draping down the tree are 3" wide blue watermarked silk. The large wire stiffened bows are a blue background with gold stars and moons woven into them. All of the ornaments are gold snowflakes and stars. It is definitely the kind of tree you have a party around . . . not the "It's a Wonderful Life" kind the family gathers around to open presents. Anyway, after we got everything cleaned up from that endeavor, I actually sat down and made three Christmas presents. I made a set of 8 jeweled wine goblet bracelets for my brother's girlfriend. I decided to make the bracelets 3 spirals long so they would show up well on the stems. But, that made it harder finding the right combinations of stones, crystals, and beads to come up with 8 distinct color schemes. Then I made a silver and gold mother's bracelet and a necklace for the daughter who is a new mom. And a very elegant four strand choaker for the daughter who is still free to dress up and go dancing on New Year's Eve. It's been a BUSY weekend. And keeping Dan occupied worked, he is feeling a bit better about Dusty now.

Oooh, Deborah! Scan a photo! I've wanted to take a beading class for the longest time. There's a lovely little shop in my neighborhood that is just so much fun to walk through, picking up this and that.
I want to bang my head on the keyboard. I've been working on a Powerpoint presentation for Friday about the classrooms I visited in Israel, and my computer crashed. And of course I hadn't saved in 20 slides or so... *Amy wanders off to gaze into the fridge in search of supper ingredients*

They guy came to put the bars on our windows today. He rang at our door. Cesare answered. He said, "I came a little early." He was supposed to be here at 3pm. It was 8:30am! I was still in bed.
He is out banging around on the balcony now. Cesare had to go out for an appointment. I can't take a shower nor go to the bar. I'm starving!
Steph, glad to hear you're imprisoned and that Pauline & Steve arrived safely.
Last night made some ribollita for dinner w/ some panini (arugula and proscuitto) - yum. Then ran to Target for some last minute gifts - kids school grabbags - I always forget about those. Couldn't believe how crowded it was! Oh - also got my holiday cards addressed - so a pretty productive evening.
Today we have the usual Tuesday drag of taking the kids to Hebrew School and picking them up - I need to remember to get chanukah candles. Will probably hed to Hallmark also to get a Yankee Candle for my cousin for the holidays and maybe bake some cookies.
Bummin now though, I left my piece of chocolate chip banana bread at home .
Sorry to be so slow to share info. on my condom collection, but I was out of town. We had a quick shopping weekend in Chicago, where I bought very little, but loved walking up and down Michigan Avenue. I made friends with the saleslady in Cartier, where I could never afford to buy anything, but she let me try on at bracelet that cost $350,000.
The condom collection started when I used to travel the backroads of Louisiana for work with a variety of co-workers. One in particular was fascinated with the various condom machines available in truck stop restrooms, and for some reason, he started buying them for me. Not to be used, you understand, but to be admired - lovely colors, textures, shapes, etc. As it became known that this collection had begun, others contributed to it.
Until recently the collection sat in a leather box in a drawer, but as my creative juices flowed one Christmas season, I realized what pretty little angels for the tree they would make. So many of them are now Christmas angels, and would be on my tree if I weren't too lazy to put one up this year.
To make Christmas condom angels, stuff a cotton ball or two in the tip of the condom. Wrap a pipe cleaner around the neck and angle it to make two arms holding a hymnal(small piece of paper). Rollup the bottom a bit and glue it. Add some glitter to the skirt if you like. Take a piece of pretty ribbon a couple of inched long, gather it in the center with wire and attach it to the pipe cleaners to make wings. Paint little eyes and a mouth on the face. Use gold threat to make a hanger. Very cute and most people don't really realize you have condoms hanging all over your tree. The ones that do usually find it pretty entertaining.
