You all may already know this but it was news to us! The lady at the ticket counter in the train station told us there is going to be a system wide train strike on May 6th. We are counting our blessings that we had already decided to rent cars that day instead of taking the trains.I just wanted to give everyone else the heads up.

Looks like it's the FIFTH May (May 5, 2006).

See:

"RAILROAD WORKERS STRIKE
April 5: There will be a national train strike on Wednesday April 5 from 10am to 5pm. The strike has been called by the CUB and SULT transportation workers unions as well as the Assemblea Nazionale dei Ferrovieri."

All I know is what she told us. She said we would be fine to travel on trains the 5th or the 7th but not on the 6th! She was trying to be helpful and give us the heads up.

I notice that this strike is scheduled for a SATURDAY. Is this particular day of the week more susceptible to labour disruption in Italy?

I ask this question because we are relying upon train service on only two days for our Italian excursion in June BUTboth fall on a Saturday (Naples- Florence, and Florence-- Venice).

Should I be making contingency plans and if so any suggestions on options?

The strike has been called off, according to this news brief in Italian. It also shows the unions complaining about the Commissione di Garanzia listing a strike in the Bologna region on May 19, which wouldn't affect passengers.
