I promised my son that we would color Easter Eggs and leave them for the Easter bunny to hide, even tho we are in Italy for the holiday. We brought dye tablets with us, but not the eggs, and now can only find dark brown ones in the supermarkets, both big and small--believe me, I've sent my husband all over! Most people weren't even aware that some chickens lay white eggs! Anyways, does anyone color the brown ones...do they take on a hue? I'm hesitant to boil up a dozen or two only to not have it work (and I suspect it won't!)

Sure it will. You wll be safer with the darker colors, if I remember correctly. (this was 100 years ago. Well, it feels like that some days! My grandparents had a farm where brown eggs were the norm AND we were there all the time.) Don't forget the vinegar when you get there. Also another thought for extra insurance-- the liquid food coloring! That stuff will stain everything! Don't forget to nick a couple of plastic gloves at the market so your hands don't get it too! good luck!

Honestly, I have tried and the dyes and food coloring do not work on these eggs Frown But there is hope . . . go to a local craft shop and get white craft paint and then follow the rest of the steps normally.

My kids just colored brown eggs at school (that is all I buy here) and it worked fine. I am not sure how old your son is, but my kids are 3 and 4 and they thought it was great. They weren't too picky and didn't try to do anything fancy. Give it a try!

HUBBY FOUND WHITE EGGS!!! I couldn't believe it when he arrived home with two dozen...and the long saga of how he had to search for them, almost didn't see them, etc. I told him to go to Panorama in Frosinone first as I have seen lots of "american" type things there and thought if anyone would have white eggs, they would--and they did, E 1.38 for six though! Hard to believe. But anyways, they're boiled, now the adventure involves the vinegar. (yes, I forgot to tell him to buy clear vinegar!). Everyone's vinegar here is homemade wine that has turned to vinegar...in-laws had red, a friend brought over some white-wine vinegar...wonder if they'll disolve the dye tablets! We will soon know. Thanks everyone for your ideas and encouragement!

My husband use to dye eggs with crepe paper - just soak the crepe paper in hot water and then dunk the eggs in.

As for white eggs - I have never found white chicken eggs here but goose eggs - they are BIG but white!
