I have a plane arriving in Pisa at about 8:30, and I need to take the train to Florence from there. I got on the Trenitalia site and I think I see a train that leaves Pisa at 10:30 pm. But, the site is giving me an error that says "Note: this option is not abailable to buy on-line. The purchasing service has been temporarily suspended."
Has anyone experienced this? Does the error just mean their website is down? Is it necessary to book this train ticket in advance?
Help, I am leaving for France tomorrow and want to book this train ticket, if necessary, before I leave the country! Thanks.
It is not necessary to book online for this train. The train from Pisa to Florence runs very regularly and you can buy your ticket there. It is impossible to book online for many train trips. In many train stations, although we can't vouch for Pisa personally, there are automated kiosks where you can slide in money or a credit card and buy your ticket easily.

First, you don't need to purchase a ticket in advance and second, it doesn't look like it will allow you to purchase in advance.
But, look closely at the schedule. There is a train station at the airport (pisa aeroporto- Pisa AE) and downtown (Pisa Centrale-Pisa C). But I do not see any trains leaving the airport train station after 8:20pm (20:20). The 10:30 train leaves from Pisa Central so you do have to get from the airport to the downtown train stations some other way.
You may want to look at getting to Florence in a different way than the train. I'll see if I can find the other thread where people mention the bus. I think the bus is actually quicker since the train between Pisa and Florence makes stops at every little station and takes at least 1:20 or longer.

You don't need to buy a ticket in advance for the Pisa-Florence journey....It is only an hour or so and you can just buy your ticket at the station. Most of the trains are local trains (not Eurostar trains) and the 10:30 pm train is only second class.
Marta, thanks so much for posting that link! (and winewoman for posting the question). i was planning to search the site for the exact same info tonight so i had to go to no effort at all to find it. it was the big debate of spending four times as much to fly direct to florence or whether there was an easy way for the italian-challenged to get there without much trouble.
i'm a newbie to slowtrav but have been reading for a couple weeks and finding some great information. i'm sad to say my first trip to italy will be a meer four days as we'll be staying the rest of our vacation visiting my sister in london. but..i'm going to make the most of it!
thanks again for that nugget of information - i needed something to go my way today.
