Hi! I am travelling to Italy & France April/May 2003. Could anyone tell me what the ATM's in these countries require? A four digit or six digit PIN I would appreciate all the help I can get Thanks in advance!

we have 4 digit pin numbers and have never had any problem. Make sure to tell you bank in advance of your travel plans so they dont shut you down when abroad. OI always have 2 atm cards when I travel. Dean

The same PIN used at home must match anywhere. We also use four-digit PINs and had no problem with ATM in Italy.
Watch, though, the daily cash withdrawal limit. We found we couldn't withdraw more than EUR300/day. This was, of course, not my Canadian bank's limit, but a limit apparently imposed on cash withdrawals by the Italian bank owning the ATM. It may even vary from bank to bank.
If you have concerns about this, I can contact an Italian friend who is a banker. He was with me when I tried to withdraw EUR350, which was all I needed and then, when I couldn't get the machine to dispense, suggested to try EUR300, which subsequently worked in a number of occasions.

I was told by the foreign currency teller today that if you have a 6 digit pin number, you can just use the first 4 digits and it works fine. This did work for us on my husband's card but I had some difficulty with mine. So just to be sure next trip I am going to change it to a 4 digit number!

We've seen numerous posts about people who are only able to withdraw 300 euro from ATMs. Our limit with our USA bank is $1000 - we had to request it. The Banca di Roma only allows 800 euro per withdrawal, but will allow us a second withdrawal, as will all the other ATMs we'ver tried. Probably a good idea to travel with 2 cards.
Regardless of italian bank release of 5 digit pins to Italians, I have been told by my bank that I need a 4 digit pin in Italy.Maybe this applies only to foreign cards. RR

As Robert wrote, what Italian banks do with their cards has nothing to do with US issued cards. My US card is 4 digit, my Italian is 5.
By the way, if you happen to use a word as your pin, make sure you remember what the number is for each letter as they are not on the machines here (had a heck of a time one time when visiting and couldn't remember the numbers that went with the letters)

I can't remember as it has been years since I used my Italian one in the states. One thing that is very important is that the Bancomat machine here in Italy will read your card and know that it is not ITalian so it gives you language options as well as allowing the different amount of numbers. COuld be the same in the US.
