I'm having a bit of trouble finding an apartment or B&B for 3 or 4 nights next month in Rome (I think May must be even more popular than October!). I really like the area around Campo de Fiori, but a nice looking apartment is available near the Forum. They refer to it as Piazza degli Zingari (not sure if that's just the name of the apartment or if it's on a piazza by that name) and the description says:

"This apartment is situated in a small building in one of the oldest sections of Rome very near the Roman Forum. The Colosseum and Subway Line B are close by."

Does anyone have any experience with this area? They don't give the address so I can't MapBlast it. Any information about how convenient it might be would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to walk (comfortably) to the Campo de Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, etc.

Krista,

I was able to bring up the piazza using viamichelin.com but I can't figure out how to copy and import the map here.

At any rate, according to viamichelin.com the piazza is at the western end of Via degli Zingari. It's close to Via Cavour and, therefore, lots of public transportation options. It's also close enough to walk to just about everything, but I should admit that I consider everything within the walls walking distance, so I might not be the best judge.

(Campo de' Fiori, for example, is about 2 km)

>>Piazza degli Zingari<<

This just off Via Cavour in the area known as "Monti"...very close to the Via dei Serpenti and Via del Boschetto. We had a thread about this area several days ago.

A very "Roman" neighborhood with plenty of shops and restaurants .

Thank you both! I didn't know about viamichelin.com - very handy. And I think I remember that thread about the neighborhood. But I still wonder how much of a walk it would be to my favorite haunts.... i.e. how long to walk to Campo de Fiori? And is there a pleasant route or do you have to cross a bunch of busy intersections?

Again, perspective here: I love Rome, so I find pretty much everything pleasant and/or interesting to look at.

Campo de' Fiori is about 2 km, I'd allow a half hour at a stolling pace, but could do it in 15 minutes if needed.

Piazza Venezia, which is between your location and the Campo de' Fiori/Pantheon/Piazza Navona area, is a challenge to cross but there are always lots of other folks to cross with.

Sounds more like running to me, Ellen. What with all the streets to be crossed if you take the most direct route (along the Fori Imperali and across Piazza Venezia then cutting through the ghetto) I would be more comfortable with the half hour estimate.

ellen,
thanks, that helps.... I love Rome, too. But in both my previous trips I became quite attached to the area around Campo de Fiori, so I know I'll want go back there frequently... 15-30 minutes isn't bad at all. But I have to admit that if I find something closer, I'll probably go with it. I know I should branch out and stay somewhere different, but I'm pretty terrible in that respect... Smile

Jim,
ok, just saw your 30 minute estimate... further confirms my thought that it would be nice to find something closer... I know, I'm such a wimp!

I know exactly what you mean, except in my case it's Trastevere. I've stayed in Prati, Quirinale, Veneto and Piazza Navona but my heart belongs in Trastevere, which was my introduction to Rome. No matter where you wind up staying, you'll have a great time; how could you not, you will be in Rome (come non potrebbe, sarà in Italia)!

What are your requirements for apartment size and amenities? I have done an extensive amount of research on apartments and B&Bs for our June/July trip and might have something to share. I concentrated primarily on the Campo area, as we too have a history there. While I was looking for accommodations for 6 people, I certainly came across lots of other beautiful apartments that we just couldn't fit into.

Hi Geralyn,
We are looking for something small, just for 2 people. The apartment that I mentioned in this post is only 106 euros a night and can be booked for as little as 3 nights. That is pretty ideal. Our last trip we found an apartment near Campo de Fiori that was about 130 euros a night and that's probably about as much as I'd want to pay. I know most of the nice apartments in great locations are more than that, but with the weak dollar, I'm trying to save where I can. Geralyn, if you have any suggestions that would be wonderful.

I'm also thinking now of expanding my search to the Trastevere area. My husband suggested that and after reading Ellen's post, I realized that that might be a great option.

thanks,
-Krista

Krista,
Now, I have obviously not stayed in any of these, and can't vouch for any of the agencies. These are just sites/apartments that I ran across in researching for my own accomodations. For most, you'll have to email for availability. So, with all those disclaimers...

www.realrome.com/propcappellari.html
has an availability calendar on the site! Also has some very picturesque properties in Trastevere.

www.sleepinitaly.com has alot of choices for the campo area & trastevere.
www.apartments-rome.com/apartments/apart_farnese_eng.htm
www.rentalinrome.com/linda/linda/htm
www.rentalinrome.com/pigna/pigna.htm
www.italyrents.com/pellegrinostudio.html
www.ilglicine.net/campodefiori/cdf_eng.htm
www.mariamilani.com/property/rob1a.htm
www.ulysseholidays.com has a few nice options, but no prices on their site.

Good Luck!
Geralyn
