My brother, sister, and I will be traveling to Italy soon. I've got the trip planned out and ready to go. The only thing left up in the air is whether or not to go to Bologna for a day in between Florence and Venice. The plan would be to take an early train into Bologna, stay the night and take a late train to Florence the next day. My brother and sister are both in their early 20's and are as interested in the Italian nightlife as much as they are in the daytime activities. I thought Bologna could be a great relaxing day in what would be an otherwise busy trip. However, would it be better to get the extra full day in Venice or Florence? We will have 2 full days in Venice and 3 full days in Florence. Or should I add an extra day to Rome (already 4 full days).
On my first trip to Italy, I went right through Bologna (on my way from Florence to Venice) and didn't even stop. Every time I go to Bologna, I wonder "what was I thinking"??? Bologna is a great place to visit if you have the time. The night life is great because it is a university city (there is always SOMETHING to do there after hours).
I vote stop. If you need any help or ideas, I am happy to help. Cyn
First, I love Bologna - spent three weeks there a few years ago; just got back from two weeks in Monteveglio; and spent two other one-week vacations near the city several years ago. Second, it does have a great nightlife scene and less of a touristy feel. BUT it sounds to me like you're rushing from place to place. AND I don't think of Bologna as "relaxing" - it's a big city after all. I would skip it this time, and add the extra day to Venice or Florence.

I would add that "extra" day to Venice or Florence, and not try to squeeze in one more stop. Remember - every time you move locations you lose about a half a day between travel time and logistics. By skipping Bologna (this time ) you'll make your sibling trip that much more relaxing and memorable.

Bologna is a University town, and although it's not very "touristy", there are plenty of young people and nightlife! But it's not relaxing! My husband and I spent a few days in Bologna last year, and I absolutely loved it! The architecture in the older section is outstanding, and I loved the food! I don't think one quick day will do it justice, though. Good luck on your trip!
