On November 4, 1966 the cities of Florence and Venice were struck but floods, being the one in Florence a catastrophic one because many lives were lost.
Luckily, there was not the case in Venice, I guess because her residents are prepared for this type of event.
The following links will take you to web sites where you can find detailed accounts of these unfortunate events and impressive images as well: 1966 Flooding in Florence and 1966 Flooding in Venice.
My husband was in the Navy stationed in Gaeta during the floods. I was lucky enough to live there with him during that time. We visited Florence a couple of weeks after the flood and it was heartbreaking. Dozens of heaters were inside Santa Croce and the Duomo trying to dry them out. If you look closely at the walls and paintings, you can still see the water line and how high the water had gotten, terribly damaging all the artwork. All of the panels in the doors of the Baptistry had fallen into the mud from the force of the water slamming the doors back and forth. To this day, the sights are fresh in my mind.
