Has anyone been? It is on May 1 and we will be in the midst of our 8 day stay in Venice. It sounds like it could be fun and it sounds like more of a local Festa, which I'm interested in.

If you've been, where is it held? Do we get off the motonave at Punta Sabbiano? And then where do we go? What kind of activities are held? What kind of displays? Most important, what kind of food?!?

I have visited the Venice Tourism website and even the Cavallino website, but have only gotten basic info. Have sent email to Cavallino municipality with questions but it is mostly in English, so don't know if I'll get a respone.

Grazie in advance for your responses!

Thanks for posting this DesertRat, I was thinking of going to this festa, but hadn't finished looking into it...

According to the site I found this on originally, the festa will be held in Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta, which is a bit far (10 km?) from Punta Sabbiano, so you'd have to take a 40 minute boat ride from san marco and then catch a local bus, to the piazza on top of that.
Here's the description "Feast of Asparagus - Cavallino Treporti: Feast with music, typical venetian boats and gastrnomic stands "

have fun if you go!

We'll be in Venice on 1 May too; we have been in Venice on 1 May for the last 8 years, but since May Day is a big holiday, we usually stick close to home. The calles, vaporetti, etc. are all mobbed especially if the weather is nice. This could make going to Cavallino a delightful or nightmarish excursion.
Ruth - still considering it

Hi Ruth -

May 1 is a Saturday this year. I wonder if that will make a difference on how big the holiday is since it is not a "normal" work day. Will a lot of things be closed then? I don't really want to "lay low" that day. If we don't go to the Festa, what would you suggest?

Thanks - Julie the Desert Rat going to the water...

It's not so much what is closed as what isn't crowded. If Cat is around she can probably tell you more exactly what is open andwhat isn't, but we usually stay on the San Polo - Dorsoduro side of the canal away from San Marco and the Rialto areas. We will go to one of our favorite campos and sit and read and watch the children playing, or taking a vaporetto to the Giardini and do the same. Cavallino is a bit off the beaten track so you might be lucky. On the other hand it is an annual festival and 1 May is a Saturday this year so it might be really mobbed. I just don't like being in the midst of masses of people, or being jammed onto a packed vaporetto. With a month, we have the luxury of taking a slow day. If you stay in Venice, I'd go to more off beat attractions such as smaller churches and museums or wander the calles away from the daytrippers' destinations. Ruth

Thanks for this advice. When you say take a vaporetto to "the Giardini" , which Giardini do you mean? I see a few.

I love Chow!Venice. Thanks for writing it.
