It turns out that I have an old friend (well, actually a quite young friend)who is now in the Bolghieri area. While I am in Florence, I may (not at all definite) want to try and visit her, but I can't seem to figure out whether or not it is possible to arrive anywhere near there by train. I've tried the Trenitalia site, and the SITA site, but with no luck. Obviously, I could ask her how to get there, but for right now I'd just like to get some idea of what the public transportation would be like.

Thanks for any help/M

T>here is a train line that goes all the way down the coastal line fropm Pisa to Grosseto and than on to Rome (it's the line that connects Rome to Genova). I don't iknow which is the closest stop to Bolgheri, maybe San VIncenzo or bibbona, but the trains that stop there are few and far between (I know quite a bit about those trains...) and buses are not reliable (I know quite a bit about them too!). If your friend has a car, you may take the train to Cecina, which is probably the closest good-sized town to Bolgheri and have her pick you up there.

Thanks, Jim

I believe you, and will check into it when I am ready to make plans. But just FYI, when I put "Bolgheri" or Bolghieri" into the Trenitalia Orario (in Italian) does it tell me there is no such station? There is something very strange about the workings of that website.

You must have hit the web site at a bad time...the correct spelling is Bolgheri.

It worked on both sites...English and Italian.

Hi!

Some local trains stop in Bolgheri, some other ones in Castagneto Carducci.

Ciao!

PS: that line is very scenic between Livorno and Rosignano!

Well Jim, you sure are right. Don't know what the problem was. Interestingly, when I put in "Firenze" as the departure, the orario gives the station as Rifredi, but when I actually check the train #, turns out that the train stops at SMN a few minutes before. I guess I expected it to be like the airline or car-rental sites, where they ask for a particular location in a city that has more than one location (airport, rental office, railway station). Anyway, point is that there are trains that go where I may wish to go.

Thanks all, and thanks Gloria for the input about the scenery!
