Hi everyone,

I will be visiting Italy this July and was interested in perhaps taking part in a walking tour. We will be in Venice, Florence and Rome. Does anyone have any experience with any tour groups? We are looking for something inexpensive but informative. I'm currently looking into Avventure Bellissime, the Original Venice Walking tour.

Thanks,

Andrea

Searching the Board for "Venice tour guide", Rome tour guide", etc. will bring up the many past threads on walking tours. Here is the most recent for Rome.

Regarding Avventure Bellissime, I took a tour with Jonathan of the Veneto two years ago. While the tour was fine for those needs (a first-timer who hadn't done much pre-trip reading on the area), it didn't have the depth of some other guided walks I've done with other companies. Still, inexpensive and enjoyable.

Hey Amy,

I realize that there have been past threads on tours and I have looked through them. However, they all appear to be on the very expensive side. I was hoping people might have suggestions about less expensive tours. As in less than 30 USD per person or at the most 50 USD.

Andrea, try creating your own walking tour! There is no mystery to what such professional outfits do: they find someone who's done some . . . footwork . . . and knows the area, then you go with them to look at it.

Yet I've very rarely heard from a guide information that is not readily available by cracking two or three good books; much of what people pay for seems to be (a) their personal charm; (b) the impression of luxury or of being an "initiate"; (c) the prechewed information. Now I'll imagine you have enough of (a), don't want (b) — good for you; and will happily do your own (c)?

Although not a fan of group travel we have used HF Tours (out of the UK) twice and liked them a lot. Their website is http://www.hfholidays.co.uk/classicwalking/worldwide/index.asp
