Chris Group, who runs Italy-Maps.com, ordered the Touring Club Italiano (TCI) regional maps just for us. I like these maps best for planning and driving because, with a scale of 1:200,000 they have the perfect amount of detail. Link to TCI Regional Maps
He also carries all the Italy province maps )LAC Carta della Provincia), that are at a 1:150,000 scale. Great for finding the exact location of a vacation rental. Link to LAC Province Maps
And he has some good hiking maps. You can find ones in Italy at 1:25,000 scale (the best for hiking), but his ones at 1:35,000 to 1:50,000 are as good as the Kompass maps for seeing the hiking trails in an area. Link to Tourist Maps
He also has an incredible selection of city maps - a really good one for Rome and even one for Siena! Link to City Maps
I have asked him to order some of the TCI Regional Road Atlases. These are the same scale as the individual regional maps, but are in a bound atlas (3 volumes for Italy). These are more expensive, but are great if you are traveling in more than one region. He put the order in for them today and if they sell well, he will carry them also.
He is expanding his website this summer to also offer maps for France.

Funny, Pauline. I just spoke to them yesterday asking if they had any of the road atlases (I have central but needed the south). They don't have them yet but I ordered the Puglia map from them and can't wait to receive it. Now hopefully we won't get lost in driving through any of the regions for which I don't have a map .
Thanks for the map info. I had already purchased my TCI Regional map of Tuscany from another source before I found this website. However, I'm definitely going to look at the province map as well as the hiking maps and will give him my business!!!
I agree with the Atlas concept,I have the north and centro,so much easier than the large fold out maps.Only slightly frustrating when you need to turn the page. Its worth it to buy this instead of borrowing they don't go out of date Very often RR
Pauline, you are magic. Just last night I was on-line looking up maps--too lazy to go to Barnes and Noble or Borders right now. Anyway, I will check this out and find what I want. Thanks once again!
I wrote to Chris last night begging for the atlases and he was just putting an order in - so they probably did not plan to order them. I like the atlases - but they are more expensive.
In my experience, Barnes and Noble and Borders only carry the Michelin and they are not detailed enough. They are good for trip planning when you want to get a good look at the layout of everything, but not detailed enough for driving.
I vote for the atlases too. They're easier to handle. The fold-out maps just get too big. Funny, I was checking out map options yesterday too, to help my friend Carmen out. I referred her to the Savvy Traveller in order to get a TCI Atlante Stradale.
