I have a friend that is going on a cruise in July and the ship will be docking in Naples. She and her husband would like to visit Pompeii and take the ferry to Positano. She does not want to drive the Amalfi Coast route because she is afraid of heights.
I have been to Pompeii but we did a tour through the cruise ship and then went to Capri on the hydrofoil.
I am not certain what ferry she would take or where she would get it and then go to Pompeii. Is this doable? If not, how would she coordinate the 2 trips?
Your friend will need to take one hydrofoil to Capri and then another to Positano. The problem is they usually fill up during the high season (they actually ask for a reservation a day in advance). She can also take the bus from Sorrento. And in all honesty, the drive along the Amalfi coast is not that bad. From Naples you take a freeway to Sorrento, then a few town streets and than only about 25 minutes along the coast. If they drive slow, they'll have no problem!
Of course the autostrada takes you from Naples to Torre Annunziata, but I have never thought of the road from there along the north side of the Sorrento peninsula as a "freeway". We drove it last Spring and, while certainly wider and less "challenging" than the Amalfi Coast highway, it is still a winding, two lane road with the potential for getting backed up behind slow trucks and buses.

Will the ship only be docked in Naples for the day? If so, I would think there would not be adequate time for Pompeii and Positano too. We spent the better part of a whole day in Pompeii and really need to return to finish off our tour. Just a thought here....From the docks you could take a taxi/bus to the train station in Naples and then get the circumvesuviana to Pompeii. The ruins are only a 2-3 minute walk from the station.
I'm sure others on here could give you excellent tips on taking in both Pompeii and Positano in the most convenient way possible........depending how long the ship is in Naples.

Unless Naples is the beginning or ending point of your friend's cruise, it's unlikely that they will be docked there for more than a day. If this is the case, as Torile points out, they cannot possibly get to both Pompeii and Positano in one day.
Pompeii is easily reached from the port by taking a cab to the main train station (Stazione Centrale) and boarding the circumvesuviana train to Pompeii.
If they'd prefer to spend the day in Positano, here is a link to an earlier thread that discusses taking a hyrofoil from Naples to Positano and provides a link to the company's web site for information on schedules.

Thank you everyone for your input. I appreciate it. I spoke w/ my friend last night and suggested that it might be better for her to book the ship's tour which would take her directly to Pompeii. I believe it also includes taking the hydrofoil to Capri.
We did this on our last cruise & it worked out well. This way, everything is taken care of by the ship & she won't worry about time limits in getting back to the ship on time.
The ship is only docked for one day. We are taking the same cruise ship in October.
I suppose that I will get around to taking a cruise someday, but this is the very reason I haven't cruised yet. Not much opportunity for sightseeing. It's more akin to "microwave" travel than slow travel.

Exactly the reason I don't like cruises and organized tours......you have to be where they want you, for as long as they want you, at the time they want you there and you come home from "vacation" needing a little R&R.
I'll take the Slow-trav way any day.
