Easter Procession on Sorrento Webcam, Thurs 13 april MDT
There will be another procession Friday 14 April, 8:30pm Sorrento time - 2:30pm EDT
A black cross has just appeared outside the Tabacchi shop in Sorrento and that reminds me that a year ago just prior to our trip to Italy (1st week was in Sorrento) I was checking the webcam frequently and stumbled on a procession in the middle of the night in Sorrento. I assume that it will follow the same route this year, so for anyone interested in watching, the White Procession starts about 3.30am (or about then), Sorrento time next Friday morning (14 April) and goes past the webcam and heads up the street straight ahead. Then a short time later reappears from around the left hand corner and goes past under the camera. So this will be about 7.30pm MDT on Thursday I guess.
The procession is quite famous and historic apparently and was worth watching. Here's a web link with info Easter procession, and here are 3 of the pictures I saved last year.
Good viewing , Graham

OH...MY...GOODNESS! Kim, tell me you've seen this. I wanted to write holy heck but I thought oh my goodness sounded better. How interesting! Leslie (And to think I thought I was the only one watching )
Hi Graham, I've seen it before so I know what it was. My Italian exhusband's mother had an uncle who was THE famous painter of Modena and when we were there in 92 Modena was doing a big exhibition of his works. His name will come to me. I can see his face. They had it plastered over huge banners in the main square of Modena. Anyhow, long story short, Elena, the mother in law, has some of his paintings. One was beaut - a still life of luscious flowers in a vase. But the other one. Whoa boy. These white hooded figures in a procession. I had to have it explained to me...I am from the US you see. Leslie. (who is trying to think how to google an artist from Modena who had an exhibition in April 92??) Hey...maybe I can describe his face in an advanced search
Right, after a half hour of useless googling, I shall give up and watch the old trip video from 92 in the morning so I can see what his name is on the big posters. Honestly! How did I get started on this? Good night. Leslie.
Frustrating isn't it when you know what you're looking for but can't find it!! If you do come up with the name I'd be interested in seeing if any of his paintings were on the web.
The procession cerainly looked sinister initially with all the peaked hats, but there were a lot of people in it and in quite an array of costumes, all white though.
Now that is daylight in Sorrento I see a roman numeral on the planter where the cross is. The cross must be one of the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) which is traditionally performed on Good Friday. The last station is probably in one of the churches in town, maybe in the Basilica of Sant'Antonino.
Hey the cross is gone! And the crates are back. I saw him open up today. I recognised his cream baseball cap but he had a red sleeveless jacket on that I haven't seen before. Did anyone see the cross go? And the roman numerals too. Leslie
Well that's a bit of a mystery, but I assume that the cross had some specific meaning to warrant putting it up and then taking it down after only one day!
Persia, have you noticed that it hasn't rained for 2 days. I have been amazed at how many days it has rained in Sorrento over the past 2 or 3 months, it definitely wasn't anywhere near as wet last year at the same time. We were watching it closely and then had a week in Sorrento in late April with perfect weather except for a couple of hours when we went to Capri.
Hi, I saw someone with short sleeves before. Yes. I've been watching the weather, it looks beaut! I was there at the end of April! The last week. My day in Capri was great. We go early in the morning before the crowds, get the funicular up, have coffee in the square at a 'glossy', walk up to that bluff/point, then stroll around the town and look for paintings or things to buy. Sometimes we even find something! Where do you stay? I'm going back in October for 8 days. We always stay at Lorelei et Londres with the fabulous views and cruise liners underneath. I've had 3 stays there, 01, 03, 05 - a week each time. This time, now I've discovered the webcam, I want my picture taken with it. Leslie.
>> Sorrento stands out for the perfect organization of two processions on Good Friday, the white and the black ones. The first, with white hooded men, organized by Santa Monica Confraternity, takes place on the night between Thursday and Friday. The procession walks in front of the statue of the Our Lady searching her Son. <<
>> On Holy Thursday and Good Friday - in an atmosphere filled with emotion and mysticism - the so-called "Battenti", men with covered faces wearing a black, red or white frock (depending on the tradition of the confraternity), slowly pass by in silence in the streets lit up by torches, carrying the symbols of the Passion and death of Christ, such as the column covered with blood, the crown of thorns, the dice and robes. <<
Thanks Pauline for your links to info on the parade and others. I expect the procession will be sometime in the evening (North American time) this next Thursday, 3.30am Friday morning(Sorrento time) - I hope I've got that calculation right.
Leslie, that's a bit of a coincidence as we were in Sorrento from the 23rd to 30th April last year, and went to Capri on Monday, 25th - that was the day it rained lightly all morning. I actually have a photo of the Lorelei et Londres taken from a vantage point above the port, great location. We stayed at a villa, Apartamenti Colorati (spelling?) about 10 mins walk back up the hill from downtown, and arranged through "Sorrento Info"-they have the webcam on the balcony above their doorway. The villa proved a great place to stay with a general grocery type store 200m away and a great restaurant "Filippo Pizzeria" next door. No tourists (except us) all local patrons and we had a lot of fun and some great meals there. We loved Sorrento and it makes a great base to see all the surrounding attractions. Not sure I'd want to be there in the main tourist season though.
Hi Graham, Was that a Saturday to Saturday rental? We are VERY interested in gathering info on places to stay in Sorrento incase Fawlty Towers I mean our usual hotel falls off the cliff or goes belly up. Does your place have good views? That is our selling point for Sorrento. We shop at the Standa on the main street. I just got out my journal: we drove down from San Gimginano to Sorrento on Thursday 21 April. On Tuesday 26 we caught the big, fast Caremar car ferry (11.60e return) at 7.45am to Capri. http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html We were at the funicular (1.30e) by 8.30 and went up to the town. We had perfect weather We would have left on Friday 29 April to drive to Rome for the flight home the next day. Leslie. (What a small world!)
Hi Leslie, We are staying in Sorrento from 29 April to 6 May this year. We booked our apartment through Interhome for $871.00 Australian. There are five of us to split the cost...so we considered this to be a good deal.
Not having been to Sorrento before, we hope it's a good apartment. Photos look great and the location is said to be central.
Interhome have an office in Frenchs Forest, NSW. Their website is www.interhome.com
We have booked another two apartments in different locations from them also.

Leslie, it is situated in Corso Italia, if that helps.
We mostly book our apartments through VRBO, but couldn't get anything we liked, so went through this agency.
They call it a resort, but I doubt it is a resort as we know them. Hopefully it is okay, but then again, we only need to sleep there. Anyway the price was good - split five ways.

The rental was Saturday to Saturday. Had quite good views as it was above the surrounding buildings, but some way back from the sea. We have a few photos that might help explain on our web site , you're welcome to look Sorrento. There is a close up of the front of the Tabacchi shop that is shown on the webcam as well if you're interested.
We obviously caught the same ferry to Capri only the day before you!!
Hi Elly, that's the main street so should be very convenient We shop at the Standa supermarket, on the same side of the street as Il Fauno, a 'glossy' bar where we sit to have afternoon tea/coffee and watch the passiegatta in the Piazza Tasso. You get a little plate of four little cookies to eat with your coffee. Sometimes we eat pasta there, I have tortellini alla panna con prosciutto and my sister has her usual spaghetti con pomodoro. Leslie.
Thanks for feedback, Leslie. We like to try and get locations that are central, because we don't wish to drive and only take public transport overseas.
Coffee AND cookies sound good!
Elly
