What will the approximate driving time be from FCO to Orvieto on a Sunday, early aftenoon, at the end of May?

About an hour and a half. If not in a hurry, Civita di Bagnoregio is a very scenic stop along the way.

The autostrada has a lot of electronic speed detection on it nowadays and it is an unpleasant surprise to get a ticket months after you get home, so not a bad idea to plan trips around the speed limit.

As Alpinista said, about 90 minutes if you take the Autostrada. However, if you want a beautiful scenic drive, consider doing this:

Get on the freeway, and sake the Cassia Bis exit toward Viterbo. Follow that to the 'Strada Cimina', and follow that to Viterbo, then map your way to Orvieto. It6 is actually an easy drive with breathtaking mountain scenery. This will take you about 2 hours, but it is worth it.

Michael, thanks for the idea of the alternate route. Looks like we will be going into FCO ourselves again this year and always looking for something to do for a change of pace on our drive to Lucca.

Last year the "something different" was our nephew (first time in Europe and absolutely destroyed by jet lag) spending the drive from FCO to our overnight stop in Orvieto saying "Can you pull over please" Roll Eyes

The diversion to Strada Cimina should be much more enjoyable for this year's drive.

No problem. That's my 'hood' :-)
As you take the Strada Cimina toward Viterbo, about 9km before Viterbo, while you in in the mountains, you will see an intersection that would take you to SORIANO.

If you have never seen Soriano, it is worth it. It is arguably one of the most breathtaking hill towns in Alto Lazio. Here are some pictures.
