I just saw on TG1 some scenes being filmed on Venice for this new version of "The Merchant of Venice". Al Pacino looks great, not to mention Jeremy Irons and Venice... Oh, Venice! Breathtaking! You can still watch the segment here on TG1. Move the button almost to the end.

From Buongiorno Venezia - VeniceWord

CINEMA. The Venetian set of "The Merchant of Venice" opened 5 January 2004, and the entire cast of the movie has, at last, arrived (many of them are at the Bauer Hotel in Via XXII Marzo). The director is Michael Radford --
Italians love him because he directed "Il Postino" ("The Postman"), the last film of Italian actor Massimo Troisi -- but everybody wants to see Al Pacino, the lead of the story (he's Shylock). "Merchant" also stars Jeremy Irons who plays the merchant Antonio, Joseph Fiennes, and newcomer Lynn Collins. The Venetian shooting schedule will probably last a week. Maybe more.

Once you visit Venice, the weather won't be any problem next time. Try winter and you will be bewitched forever. Trust me.

Really, Westsider?? I've really been wanting to go, and my husband, Jim keeps telling me to plan it (we already live here anyway), and gfs who live in Milano and Genoa say winter is horrible time to go, but I dunno, I think it would be wonderful ANY TIME, like now for example! Smile and I LOVE the story of The Merchant of Venice... can hardly wait to see this new movie version!

Ling, one of the good things about going to Venice in winter is the prices of hotels are lower and it is not too crowded.

Spring is nice though because the weather is great (especially May) and it's not too crowded yet, and lots of bars and restaurants have tables outside.

I wouldn't go in summer. Too hot, and too crowded.

P.S. My co-author is in Venice right now and she says filming is going on everywhere. She says everyone is very excited about it.

Shannon,

Since she is there, if you talk to her again would you ask her about hotels very close to San Georgio della Greci? I'm not finding anything but I'm sure I just haven't looked in the right place yet.

Thank You!

Amelia,

I think the reason why you can't find anything in the Internet is because you are using a wrong spelling. The name is San Giorgio dei Greci. I've found this apartment so far but I am sure there are other accommodations like THIS for instance.

These hotels are a very short walk to San Giorgio dei Greci: Bisanzio, Locanda Remedio, Paganelli, Scandinavia and Savoia and Jolanda. I haven't stayed at any of these but with a further research you should be able to find helpful information. Here is the URL for the Bisanzio, which is just a start: www.bisanzio.com/

Is Ponte dei Greci close by? If so, then Venice Rentals has an apartment near by.

Amelia, why do you want to be in that area? Not that this is bad, but you have a plethora of housing choices within 15 minutes of this church. It's very near the Piazza San Marco - I'd find someplace to stay a little out of the area.

Shannon,

We are only spending one night (a Saturday)in Venice then getting up and going to church at San Giorgio. Since we lived so close to Venice, we were there frequently and my husband doesn't want to spend a lot of time wandering Venice this trip. He does have a point- three years in Italy and we never made it out of Friuli and the Veneto, his stops to refuel in Livorno and Bari don't really count. Being very much not a morning person, I was hoping to just roll out of bed and be there. Maybe I'll go ahead and book us into Al Campanile & be done with that part. We toyed with the idea of doing something outrageous and springing for a night at the Bauer but my cheapness seems to be getting the best of that idea.

Westsider- you were right! I find so much when I spell it correctly.

Thanks you all

Amelia

Go for the Savoia & Jolanda - it's close to the Greci and would probably satisfy your Bauer lust at a much more reasonable price.
