Advice/suggestions on car rentals and agencies. We will need a weekly rental later this year (october)for 4 adults w luggage. Probably pickup at Rome airport for one or two weeks. I would like to hear about specific agencies, cars large enough (I'm 6'4" tall, insurance, what one can expect to pay...i.e. the whole enchilada (or whatever that is in Italian). Thanks for your help!

You may want to check out this link. It's on the slowtrav website (www.slowtrav.com) and has a ton of info on renting cars and driving in Italy.
From personal experience, we've rented intermediate cars which were fine for 2 adults and 2 kids but my husband is 6' and that might be pushing it for you. Also picking up at the airport adds a surcharge (something like 12 or 15% - cant remember) although when picking up somewhere else and dropping at the airport there's usually no problem. Just something else to be wary of.
We rented a Renault View(?) last March through the Autoeurope link from this site--straightforward, picked it up in Rome and returned it in Venice. It was roomy enough for 5 adults and luggage although, on the one day I sat in the back, I marveled at how few complaints the sverely-upright seat generated...had I a choice I'd go for something more along the lines of a Passat wagon. My husband is 6-3 and had no problems with this car . We had a misadventure on a strada blanca in the Val d'Orcia, bottoming out and eventually losing all oil (which we noticed when parked on the incline leading up to Montichiello).A loooong day later (including a tow-truck journey to Siena and on to Florence for a replacement car) we ended up with another version of the same model car and a memorable story. Regardless of what you end up renting, I would heartily recommend a cellphone--it was a lifesaver, and would have been even better with two!!!
