Greetings,
We will be staying in Orvieto for a weeks time and are wondering if there are any day trips to area vineyards that could be reached by bus or other public transportation as we do not wish to rent a car during our stay. We have arrangements to go to Florence for a day trip, but would welcome any other input as to trips we could take during our stay that could be reached with public transportation.......
Grazie!

Welcome to Slowtrav/Slowtalk.

Do you read in Italian? If so, the website for the Comune of Orvieto has lots of information to get you started.

Another idea is to go over to the main Slowtrav site and search the trip reports here. I did a keyword search for "Orvieto" and came up with more than 100 reports to look at. I'm sure you'll find lots of ideas there.

Antinori's Castello della Sala vineyard is roughly 18 km from Orvieto.

Reaching a vineyard via public transport seems a bit improbable though I don't know for sure. How about a taxi?

You might think about asking a guide to take you on a day journey to some wineries in the area. I know someone who speaks very good English. I think, too, that it's not too likely, though not impossible, to find public transport to area wineries. Or just rent a car for the day from Orvieto....very easy. Many good wineries in the area. And don't miss the little wine bar on Via Filippeschi, Il Vincaffe. Great wine/great tasts to pair w/the wines. Stefano and Cristiano don't have much English but are very good hosts.

You can also take a bus to Civita d' Bagnoregio, which should not be missed. Go on a weekday and it will be very lovely and quiet. Have bruschetta and local wine at L'Antico Frantoio....nice family; great atmosphere......have a great time,
ciao,
Cheryl

did you ask your hotel? I doubt that you can go to a winery with public transport. Even if there should be a bus it might take you the whole day to get there and back. I second the suggestion that some of the taxi drivers might have a day rate to bring you around a few wineries and do some tasting. Make sure to make clear agreements on costs of transport and tasting though
