We will be staying in Massa Lubrense in late May and are thinking of taking a day to take in at least the Vatican/Sisteen chapel, and colosium in Rome. Does anyone know if there is a bus line or train that would takes us from there or Sorrento to Rome and back. And, the better question is, can this be done in a day. Any feedback or suggestions would be helpful.

While it can be done, it is a huge hike! Even by car, it would be a 3.5 to 4 hour trip each way. By train, you need to get to the Circumvesuviana, then take it to Napoli. CHange for the Roma train. Then get from the train station to your sights.

If its ancient Roma you want, go to Paestum from Massa. Incredible sight and there will be a handfull of people. Get a guide at the gate adn you will in a state of wonder. We spent so much time on the grounds that we did not see the museo which is supposed to be fab! An added plus was the stop along the SS18 for a panino al mozzarella di bufala (made that morning) e prosciutto. Yum! FOr amazing art take the circumvesuviana to Napoli and head to the Capodimonte and Museo Arcologeo. Not the same as the Sistina but its much closer and less exhausting to see!

From Massa, you drive to Sorrento. Then train to Naples - about 1hr30min if I remember right, then the Eurostar train to Rome - another 2hr, I think. Not worth it when you could spend the day in Naples instead. Lots to see and do there. You will probably want one day trip for Naples and one for Pompeii.

Can you not spend a few nights in Rome when you leave? Are you flying from Rome?

Not only is it a long hike as Dean says, once you get to Rome you're thinking of two of the longest visits — in diametrally opposite parts of the City. The whole thing sounds like a terrible idea! Surely you'll be Romed out by Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae in the immediate area?

If you absolutely must do it, drop the Colosseum (proper spelling); the amphitheatre in Pompeii, though smaller, is pretty much as well preserved and of nearly equal interest historically because of the riots of 59 A.D.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I thought it might be too much but it is hard to tell from the maps we have found on the internet. Dean, the trip to Paestum sounds like the ticket. Pauline, thanks for your insight. We are flying in and out of Naples and only have 7 days. We plan on seeing Pompeii and such for sure. Most likely a day in Positano and some in Sorrento. As far as a day trip to Naples, we have almost the whole day we leave for that. We will have to leave our apartment late morning and do not have a flight out of Naples until about 11:30pm. Any suggestions on where to safely store our luggage for the day at the Naples airport? We will take the bus from Sorrento to the airport and will have a lot of time to kill in Naples. I would rather not spend it at the airport.
Thanks
