Should my wife & I go to Arezzo Antique market Sat.Apr 5, in the a.m., or is it bigger on Sun.? Is there any sense looking for a parking space within 5-6 blocks of Piazza Grande, or should we bus in from outside the wall? We want to spend a day in Padova, are there any favorite shops/areas to recommend?

I think going on Saturday is the better plan. More of the other shops in the city will be open, so when you finish with the market, you can enjoy the rest of the town.
I've never tried to park in Arezzo - have always taken the train in. The traffic, the one time I did return a rental car there, was pretty heavy around the Piazza.

I was there on a Sunday in May, and we did manage to park two-three blocks from the main part of the market. Course it may have involved going the wrong way down a one-way street...but the driver whose car I was following was indeed intrepid (as was I) and it all worked out!

LOL. Sally, that was because I wasn't driving that car your were following! I had turned the wheel over to Alessandra. She knew her way around and of course, I assured her that we had full coverage on the rental car. It occures to me that the way to find a good parking place at market in Arezzo is to know the back streets.

My advice would be to make a decision to park a slight distance from the centro. As I remember, the police were directing traffic away from that area. There are parking lots near the Station and the Archaelogical Museum. Try and stay on the road that skirts the centro and park in one of those lots.
The market covers most of the town, so you will only have to walk four or five blocks to start shopping.

As a matter of fact, Peter, it was a fun day. Despite the rain. And I get to look at and touch the treasures I found every single day. I had recently remodeled my kitchen and was looking for some special cabinet hardware. I found some high gloss cobalt blue ceramic knobs from the 19th century. They have their original brass center screws with the patina undisturbed. The knobs are in two sizes and are shaped somewhat like garlic bulbs as seen from the bottom. So, everytime I open a drawer or door in my kitchen, I touch a bit of Italy. When we sell this house, I will be replacing all of these knobs before I let the realtors show it. I'd have to turn down a contract if someone saw them and wanted them left.

Should we go on 4 hour bus tour of Lake Garda? We've been to Locarno, Stressa,& Como. I want to play hooky, and take train Verona-Padua for a look-see. Would we miss anything at Sirmione?

Can someone refresh my memory? Is the Arezzo market the first weekend of the month? What do you think they will do if the first Saturday is All Saints Day?

Kim, the market is on the first Sunday of the month and the preceeding Saturday. So for example, the June market will actually be Sat. 31 May and Sun. 1 June. My guess (and it is only a guess) is that the market will still be held on 1 Nov. Perhaps someone in-country can give you a firm answer to that one.

Kim, there is a huge annual market in Perugia (outside of town near the stadium) the week of All Saints', if you are in the area. It is less antique-y, but lots of fun stuff to be seen. I don't know where you'll be staying, but you may want to stop by.
Peter, I was in Arezzo last April for the market on Saturday and it was wonderful until the rain started. In about 20 minutes almost all stalls were closed except for a few that were at the upper end of the village under a covered walkway. What a bummer, the market itself was fantastic. I did drive into Arezzo and parked along the south end of town with no problem.
Enjoy, and take an umbrella.
