We just booked 3 nights in the Astoria Palace near Station Policlinco. Will this be a nice neighborhood to stroll around yet convenient to Old City? This is our first visit to Rome(after a week in the countryside) and we like a mix of tourism and ambience with an emphasis on art and architecture (not necessarily ancient)and of course great cafe dining. Our place does have a great rooftop terrace.

The neigborhood is probably fine for walking around at night but not particularly convenient to the most of tourist areas of Rome. It is about 2.5 miles from the Campo de'Fiori, actually beyond the perimeter of what is known as the "centro storico". Certainly using the metro, cabs and buses, access to the center is not difficult, but I usually prefer to be right in the thick of things.

If you look over on the main site and the Italy hotel reviews (linked to the right on this page) you'll find a review.

Good decision - Trastevere will be a better location for a first visit.
