I joined a couple of weeks ago. It was not the easiest thing to do but I was able to do it online thru their secure website.
I had the same question you did so I emailed them and got a reply the next day that they would send the card snail mail in a week or so. And they did. It's a very attractive heavy plastic card with one's name printed on it. As you know, you have to show the card, with photo ID, at any of the places where it is accepted.
I think you can also join at their office when you arrive in Florence but I like to take care of as much as possible before arrival.
This is not the easiest process. Their server has been down, etc etc. But it will be worth it, I'm sure.

I should add that the pass took less than a week to arrive, tho I suppose you can't always count on the mail. And I should add thanks to Jane, whose posts provided the information about this very useful opportunity.

Jane or Ginny58, Do you remember what the "document number" eg CI number? is on the application for the Uffizi membership? I tried to fill in the online application and it won't let me submit until I enter something in that field, but what is it?
I just put "n/a" for that and I think for something else that didn't apply to me--maybe "company". I also had a bit of trouble figuring out "province" and "state". I put Massachusetts and USA, crossed my fingers, and it was accepted. Be creative--just don't leave anything blank.

I am not sure about that number and if Ginny would let us know I can add that to my info. page. We lived in Italy at the time and so had our Italian numbers and could just fill in the blanks easily. I am not sure what is wanted when applying my mail. So--Ginny, what did you use? Grazie.
It looks as if we were posting at the same time, Jane. I answered that question just before your last post. I just wrote "n/a"--"not applicable"--for the mystery number, company etc. And the online form accepted that.

Ginny58 & Jane & M C Mone, Thanks so much for all the information. I have been trying to figure this Uffizi membership thing out for a couple weeks but I felt weird about faxing my information with no confirmation and I couldn't figure out what to put for the CI number on the online form. It didn't even occur to me to just put N/A. Anyways I appreciate everyones help. I just ordered my card online and I am crossing my fingers it comes before May 30.
Hi- For those who like to avoid using their visa on the internet, it is a quick and simple procedure to pick up a Uffizi pass at the office in Florence. We have done this two years in a row. The office opens at ten. Cheers, MayK

OK. The page re. passes is updated with Ginny's info. Mayk, is right about picking up there. If you go to the link in my signature, you will read how to do that. It is quite simple--except sometimes, as in all things Italian, the office isn't open. But--it usually is.
Two weeks after submitting the online application for Friends of the Uffizi membership, we got our heavy plastic (with full names on the back) membership passes in the mail. This should make for a much easier and relaxing time getting into the many Florence museums this membership includes.
