I already posted a question about using ATMS in italy. I did not really get any helpful answers so i spoke to a commercial bank who said that their ATM cards work in Italy in the "Plus machines" Does any one know what a "Plus machine" means? Have you seen any in italy?

Also: Do any of you living in Italy use a Debit Card? I was told that a Debit Card works where there is a VISA logo or anywhere VISA cards are accepted?

thank you

If you look on the reverse side of your ATM card you will see an insignia with the words PLUS.....maybe also one marked Cirrus. then you just look for ATM machines with those same insignia posted (but almost all of them in Italy are ) I use my Visa Debit card that is attached to my stateside bank everywhere visa is accepted. Never have had a problem.

Just a thought on the Debit Card use, which I may have mentioned in another thread...my rep in the Private Banking department of Bank of America mentioned that he doesn't use his debit card abroad because, debit cards being debit cards, your account is charged immediately and the money is gone. Because of the remote possibility of card theft or fraud, he recommended using only a credit card for purchases, as your liability is zero or nearly zero if a charge is made inaccurately or fraudulently. He said he only uses the debit card at ATM's. Sounded to me like prudent advice. BTW, just got back from using my debit card for cash at ATM's, never had one refusal for not being the "right" brand (Plus vs Cirrus). They are everywhere, although it's best not to get down to the final euros, as that is the one time they'll all have disappeared into a black hole.

I'm sure I posted information, almost the same as Passerotto has above, to help you out regarding the Plus or Cirrus on the back of your ATM card.

Passerotto is correct and there are atm all over the country, but one bit of advice is to call your credit card company before your trip and let them know the details of your trip. I was told your card could be denied it you have unusual activity on your card, I have used my card all over and do not bring large amounts of cash or checks. Better to be safe then sorry.
