Having taken all of your comments to heart, we've decided to ditch the car at the airport and stay right in the heart of Rome.

I've been through hundreds of listings and have it narrowed down to the following top two choices:

vrbo piazza navona

or vrbo pantheon

I also really like the look of this one chagall but I think it is less well located.

If anyone has any thoughts on the above or suggestions for a great 1 bedroom around Navona, Campo, Pantheon, I'd be most appreciative.

The first apartment, in the Coronari area, is a great neighborood. Lots of artisans and antique restorers, and not overrun like around the Pantheon. And my fave gelateria, del Teatro, is there, on Via de San Simone.
One thing that would bother me is the ladder to the bed, but… your call. :-)

But the location of the 3rd place is also wonderful. What is your objection, may I ask? Again, I would pick that any day over the Pantheon area.
The Pantheon area is nice, but the other 2 locations have much more charm and are less overrun.

Hi Nancy,

I was hoping you'd chime in and particularly hoping you'd have a "Contessa" equivalent for us in Rome.... but glad to have confirmation on the neighborhood.

I think we'll be fine with the stairs, though I am sure I'll whack my head at least once or twice getting out of bed.

As a total aside, hope your not suffering too much from the cold - if it's any consolation, it's downright Arctic-like here in the Midi.

I don't mean to make the Pantheon area sound negative. It is nice, but the other 2 locations have more charm and are less overrun.

However on the 3rd rental, I wonder about the window views and the light issue.

Sigh, we did stay in a Contessa equivalent place in Rome, right on Piazza Farnese. We must have been under investigation by the French Ministry of Interior because every night we would peer from our living room window into the French Embassy across the square, to admire the breathtaking illuminated ceiling. But it was a 3-bedroom place that we shared with friends, for a rental of 2500 euro/week. It has been reviewed several times on the board, under "Farnese 1" or "Farnese I".

Am soooo freezing my butt in Paris. Minus 3°C outside.

We rented another 1 bed on the Via dei Coronari from Sleep in Italy last year that had the benefit of a terrace with a table. I reviewed it here. Next door to the wonderful Gelateria del Teatro !

Last May we rented this lovely apartment right outside of Campo:

And the reviews:

I would stay again in a heartbeat! The location was walkable to almost everywhere we wanted to visit.

Kevin, I think you're wise to stay right in Rome. To me, all three of your possible apartments are very well-located; even the Chagall apartment really is in a good position (that area is so small that it would be no more than a 10 minute walk to, say, Piazza Navona. And it's very close to my language school!)

But Panda's suggestion, with the terraces, really looks great! I think that would be my favourite, as it's so great to have some outdoor space.

Cheers,
Sandra

Pleased to see you are staying in Roma ~ and in an apartment!

Several times I've rented an apartment off of Coronari ~ a generally peaceful spot in Roma. Loved it! It overlooked Bramante's Closter in Santa Maria della Pace... but it was for sale, it sold and is no longer available Frown

I'll add my voice to the praise for the apartments you have found so far. We're all unique and have different needs. When I'm in Roma, I'm often there for several weeks and love having a washing machine. Such a luxury but perhaps not important to you. I find it's always a plus to have outside spaces, as in Panda's choice.

There is a one bedroom apartment offered by Sleep in Italy that I nearly rented, until a friend insisted on meeting me in Roma and I switched to a two bedroom apartment. It's listed as Gesu ~ a rooftop terrace and a washing machine AND a positive review in Slow Travel (review #2701). I really liked the look of this apartment and it's in a great location behind the Pantheon/Santa Maria Sopra Minerva.

Happy apartment hunting, Kevin

Heidi

We loved the apartment we had for two weeks in November 2008 (arrived just two days after Obama was elected. I reviewed it and you can view at Casa Cleme. Not right in the center, but in a real non-tourist neighborhood. Easy to take a subway or bus to the center. Check it out. As a plus, the owner lives in New York, so you pay in dollars, not euros and she is very helpful.
We ate dinner most nights in the surrounding neighborhood. We were the only non-Italians in sight.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. A number of them were already booked, but my top too choices just emailed me back to say the places are available, so now it is just a question of choosing between them given that the neighborhood gets a unanimous thumbs up.
