We returned last week from spending the most amazing month in Rome. Thank you again to this entire community for all your help and advice. If you recall, it was myself, my husband, and our 2 daughters, ages 3 years and 9 months. I'll keep this brief, as I'm going to write up a more detailed trip report soon. But for anyone contemplating Rome with young children, all I can say is...Go! Now! My girls were like little movie stars everywhere we went. My 3 year old greeted everyone with such an enthusiastic "Ciao!" My 9 month old was held by more arms than you could imagine! I was often alone with the girls in the afternoon while my husband worked. Rome's public transportation can be a little difficult with one adult managing a baby in a stroller and a 3 year old...yet complete strangers helped me on and off busses, up and down the stairs at the Metro, always made room for us to sit. It is quite clear that in Italy, the concept of "it takes a village to raise a child" is very strong. In addition to Rome, we did weekend trips to Orvieto, Sorrento and Frascati (our favorite!). Since we've been back, my 3 year old keeps asking me when we can return. I only wish I could tell her "very soon"!!! I'd return tomorrow in a heartbeat! Wonderful city. Amazing people. Delicious food and the best, cheap wine! I'll leave you with a photo of our daily breakfast at our neighborhood cafe...complete with little ladies who held my baby so I could drink my cappuccino! Man, do I miss Italy! Angela

You had the right resolution (72ppi) but the image was too wide (2000 px) - I changed it to 500 px wide.
Great photo!!

Angela, when I saw that photo my mouth instantly watered and tears came to my eyes. I can't wait to go back either. I am eager to read your trip report. Ciao!

I will be going in November. It sounds like you guys fell in love with Rome and they felt the same way. What a great experience for your daughter. Who knows what this may lead to.
Thanks so much for bringing Rome back with you so we could share it. I start to miss it on the plane coming home. I'm planning to go back in October, alone. I get the thing with the Italians and babies. In November I was there with my baby granddaughter and it was the same. I love those people. Thanks for the great photo, too.
Angela, And that is exactly why we have made three trips to Rome in almost as many years. We are no sooner off the plane and we are starting to plan for the next!

Angela, I'm looking forward to your report. I seem to recall you stayed on the Vatican side of Rome, and I'd like to hear how you liked the neighborhood and apartment. I'm glad to hear that your family, and particularly your kids, had such a great time.
After having dinner one night on our first trip to Rome with our three year old daughter, the waitress offered an apertivo and without a prompt from us she took our daughter back to the kitchen "to help make our desert" we were left to have a quiet if brief moment over our amaro.

How sweet and wonderful for your little family. Making great memories for your children; I couldn't think of a better way to do it. I'll be taking my daughter and new grandchild in 2007.........
And don't worry about getting back there.....After my first trip 11 years ago, I began going once a year, then twice, and now I go 3 times a year, no matter what! You'll figure it out. Even my work knows I can't stay away, so accommodate me in my addiction. So, start planning YOUR next trip.....ciao, Cheryl
Will Travel - yes, we did stay on the west side. However our apt was further west than the Vatican, near the Cornelia metro. But it was a great location! Very few tourists, very little english spoken - we loved it.
Angela, my husband and I leave Apr 22 for a week in Rome, we are also staying near the Vatican. Any special restaurants you'd like to pass along would be appreciated. We arrive on Sun and I know most are closed. Look forward to your report and our week. Ciao
Angela and I met in person in the airport in Philadelphia after first "meeting" on this board and discovering that we were on the same flight to Rome. We "only" got to stay for 9 days with our 1, 4 and 14 year old. I've been waiting for word of your trip, Angela!
We, too, loved Rome and are trying to figure out how to get back. I'm almost done with my trip report. As I posted here after we returned, I found Rome to be one of the most comfortable cities I've ever been in - not intimidating at all, and quite marvelous for children (and adults too, of course...)
Angela & Amy - I can't wait to read your trip reports! We have a 2 year old and a 9 1/2 month old so I'm curious about how things went juggling the kids. -Mary
Oh boy, does this sound familiar! After our first trip to Italy in Sept 2000, we too fell in love and went back in Jan 2001, April 2001, Oct 2001, May 2002, Nov 2002 (when we bought a house!), April 2003, and finally moved to Italy in Sept 2003.
AngelaPM, your profile doesn't tell me where you live (a pet peeve! Why won't people give just a little info in their profiles so that others can get a better of idea of who they are, where they live, etc???!!!) but anyway, we joined the NWA FF program. NWA frequestnly offers "zone" specials...sometimes using miles, sometimes not. For our Jan 2001 trip we used miles and $299 each to fly from Louisville to Rome. My sister recently flew to London from Louisville for $388 roundtrip, no miles needed.
Join as many FF programs as you can and watch for their specials! From the sound of it, you'll be back sooner rather than later...good luck!
