We're planning a trip to Umbria and staying at a house just outside of Assisi. We'll need a car and I've been doing some initial pricing. We're flying into Rome and staying a few days there and my plan was to take a train to Assisi and rent the car there...but Auto Europe doesn't rent in Assisi apparently. Has anyone else rented from another agency in Assisi? Other suggestions? We'd hoped to avoid driving in Rome, but should we simply rent from the train station there?

Perugia (about 12 miles away from Assis) would be your closest pick up point for car rental if you want to go to Assisi. I've looked on various websites for both European and specifically Italian car rental firms but none of them seem to list Assisi city as a pick up point.
All the major firms have their pick up points at the Perugia railway station and then it is just a matter of navigating yourself onto the road to Assisi.

Spoleto is further away but could be an alternative.

Only you can decide if that is easier than picking up your car in Rome!

The airport is easy, but there is the airport pickup charge to consider. In Perugia you can pick up from the train station, but make sure your navigator has a sharp eye for the road signs! Assisi is marked well, but there are lots of signs and you really have to keep looking.

we dropped our car off in Foligno and took a quick train ride to Assisi. (we had picked up the car in Florence).

Good luck!

We are leaving in 9 days, also flying into Rome. After a few days there we will train to Florence then on to Perugia, where we pick up our rental car at the station and drive to Assisi.

My yellow pages (Pagine Utili, 1999-2000, but I'm pretty sure most of the resources in it haven't up and vanished) lists 2 "autonoloeggio senza autista" (noleggio = rental will be a useful word to some) in Assisi:

Autoservice Valentini (Luigi Valentini), 1. via della Repubblica in S. Maria degli Angeli (that's in the plain right next to the train station)

B. Iacopi in località Palazzo

I think Foligno is more convenient than Perugia: an easier drive out, and a shorter train ride from Rome. But I just tried it on Auto Europe: Foligno is on their pull-down, but I get a screen saying "Search again" when I try it. You might call Auto Europe to clear that up if you want to use them. The Avis site shows them with an office at the Foligno station.

Keep in mind that AutoEurope is a broker, and can rent whereever there are offices for Avis, Hertz, Europcar, etc. There are no "AutoEurope" offices per say.

As someone who tries to avoid changes in modes of transportation as much as possible, I would suggest that you re-consider renting in Rome and driving to Assisi. We have had numerous threads about driving out of Rome and there are a number of rental office location options that are not too difficult.

Once out of Rome, it is an easy and pleasant drive and there are various options for stops if you are so inclined--Orvieto, Todi, Deruta, etc. And you have avoided at least one change from train to car and possibly one or two train connections.

Just a slight clarification....I don't think that AutoEurope contracts cover every single Hertz, Avis, Europcar, AutoEuropa, etc. locations in Italy. But they do have a list of active offices on their web site.....

Remember, you'll be a little toasty just off the transatlantic flight; I'd recommend the train to Foligno and leave the driving to them. You don't want to be behind the wheel when you "hit the wall," and figuring out where you are and where you're going in a new country for several hours on end can bring that wall on faster than normal...

It looks like, in fact, that "tjhardy" will be spending some time in Rome before his move to Assisi.

But whether or not to drive after an overnight flight depends a lot on one's own personal physical abilities. I can sleep anywhere and I find a drive of anywhere between 2-4 hours very possible after I land in Italy. Of course, others may not be prepared to do so and they should follow their own instincts.

Oops, mea culpa, the flight will certainly not be a factor in this case (The off-the-plane consideration would remain only for those who may not be accustomed to driving after long transatlantic flights and an unpredictable amount of sleep).
