I love Il Carmine in the Oltr'Arno. It is just around the corner from P Il Carmine and not very far from Santo Spirito. The apartments are clean, nice and functional in the annex. The main building apartments seem more charming fromthe pictures but we did not see them. Across tha Arno, you are far enough away from the tourist crowds to feel in a different world yet no more than a 20 minute walk to most of the sights in il centro. Wine Notes* Tuscan Restaurant List* Wine, Opera & Food* Tripwords of wisdom to live by from Stephen Sondheim's The Frogs {The chorus is singing a prayer to Dionysus...} Dionysius "A hymm to me, the god of wine..." Xanthius (His slave) "I thought you were the god of drama?" Dionysius "I am the god of wine and the god of drama. A little wine will get you thru a lot of drama"

Hi, I think Dean's suggestion is very well worth considering. We love the Oltrano, you can even stay in Elizabeth and Robert Browning's apartment via the Landmark Trust should the fancy take you although i believe the location is somewhat noisey as it sits very close to a busy road, www.landmarktrust.co.ukWendy and probably Ricardo too as I haven't logged on!

chaleur, Do you have any particular apartments in mind that you could post links to - and we could evaluate their location? Basically, I think anything in the Centro Storico is a good base for seeing Florence on foot, but as others noted the Oltrarno area is also worth a look. Slow Talk Message Board Rules

We stayed at Il Carmine this spring and really enjoyed the location. Florence is such a wonderful city for walking that you can get just about anywhere on foot. The Oltrarno feels more like a real neighborhood. As you approach the S. Trinita bridge, stop at bar Marino for caffe and pastry in the morning.
