I just looked up a internet site that was suggested by my guide book for purchasing museum tickets ahead of time and was shocked to see that to buy tickets for the Galleria dell'Accademia to see David and the Uffizi Gallery it would cost us $108 for the two of us! I know that it can be a blessing due to the lines, but is their a less expensive route? I can't imagine spending that kind of money on a day of museum visits!

That can't be right. You must have been looking at a tour. The surcharge is only a few Euros. Try this website, WeekendaFirenze. The total is under 30 Euros; I just tried.
Jaisy - I called the Accademia directly from the states and that worked out well two w/ no surcharge. I can't seem to put my fingers on the English speaking phone number but can poke around if you're interested.
For all state-run museums in Florence you can make reservations by calling 055 294 883. From the US/Canada, preface that number with 011 39. I've seen websites where the booking fee is higher than the entrance fee. I suggest you go to this website with links to individual museum websites all over Italy: www.museionline.it
When we were there in September, our hotel gave us a rate which included reserved (and paid for) tickets to the Uffizzi. For that and 2 nights I think we paid €200.00.
By the way...I grew up a couple of exits down the turnpike from Lancaster!
My last visit to Florence in Oct, I had asked the B&B where I was staying at to make the reservations for me for the Accademia. When I arrived they had my reservation # for me. I wonder why more people do not ask the place they are staying to do this for them or maybe very few place are willing to do this and I should feel very lucky?
I done this for Rome too asking the hotel to make my reservations for the Galleria Borghese. It was a good thing, because of a strike that was announced on the day I was going and I did not know because I was in Tuscany, they went ahead and made the reservation for another day.

Bill, The hotels I've stayed at have always been willing to make reservations for me, but remember that many Slow Travelers stay in rented houses or apartments that don't have desk staff to handle such details.
