Hello everyone, We're interested to know a bit about "Pietrasanta" in Tuscuny and how long it might take getting to the airport in Pisa using public transportation. thank you.
Pietrasanta has a very active arts community that draws many visitors. The town square includes a giant picture frame that you can use for your own photo artistry.
If you have an interest in WW II history, there is a memorial site and museum for one of the more horrible atrocities of the Italian war at Sant' Anna di Stazzema, near Pietrasanta.
Pietrasanta is famous for its "famous" vistors. It is a place that is filled with the who is who of Italy in July and August. There are some nice shops, restaurants and incredible nightlife.
With that said, I would not call it charming. But from there you can visit many wonderful places such as Carrara, Viareggio, Lucca, Lerici, Portovenere, Le Cinque Terre, Bocca d Magra and more. My suggestion is to stay somewhere a little more "interesting" - even Forte dei Marmi is better although my first choices are Portovenere or Lerici...
It's less than an hour from the airport. You can either take the airport train or a bus right in front of the terminal to the central station, and from there get the train (direction La Spezia) to Pietrasanta.
When you exit the baggage claim, there is a train ticket office on the right, they'll tell you whether the bus or train works better for your schedule.
Pietrasanta has lots of art galleries and excellent restaurants; during the summer they are active late into the evening, but in November things have slowed down a lot. The sculpting and carving studios have almost all moved out of town (some locals were complaining about noise and dust), so it's not as easy to visit them as it once was.
There is a sculpture museum at the top of the square, to the right, and frequent exhibits in the old church next to the museum. Sometimes there are concerts on weekends, but not like Lucca, which has concerts all the time. The cemetery is wonderful, lots of the memorials were carved by the local carvers for their friends and family, so there is some exceptional work there. I have a coupld of photos from the cemetery at http://stonecarver.com/gargoyles/tuscany.html
There are a few nice new small hotels in addition to the old standards.
When will you be there?

Thank you Gargoyle, We do not yet know if Pietrasanta is the place to stay for our short three day visit in Turcany. But we do know that it will be somewhere close by. At the moment we're trying to find out all we can about the area hoping to hit the perfect town for that time of year. We've been to Italy many times but never in the middle of Winter (mid January). We are actually Leaving the U.S. in late November and will be staying in the far South until January. Another question to anyone out there; Should we rent a car or should we just use public transport. Thank you again.
