I'll be in Italy for 2.5 weeks, starting June 14. I have reservations for the longer stays (Siena, Cuma, Rome) but I have built in two travel days (I'll have a car for a week). Normally I have everything booked well in advance, but my traveling companion wants to wing it for those two nights, esp. since we will have a car.
The first night would be somewhere between Siena and Cuma and I'm thinking Southern Tuscany/Umbria. The second we would be coming from Cuma/Naples on our way to Rome.
So two questions: is this crazy? and any suggestions?
It's not crazy, it's fine. Just maybe print out for yourself a couple of hotels or inns which take one-nighters in a few different towns which might interest you to have as a reference. You can choose to chuck the list or to use it as needed.
We had a wonderful vacation in Ireland/Scotland a couple of years ago. We made no advance reservations (rare for me, but we thought we'd give it a try) and just started looking for B & B signs late each afternoon as we explored the countryside. We always found wonderful places pretty easily, and we enjoyed not having to search around an unfamiliar town for a certain location we'd booked from home.
Granted, one night we did have to drive an hour after dark before we found a B & B along the highway, but that was memorable to. We were exhausted, and when we finally found a place, they had a great selection of Scotch Whisky for us to sample!
Just do a little checking in advance on the towns you might be staying in. If there's some festival or music concert in town when you're there, things might be booked up all over the area. Otherwise it's usually not hard to find lodging.
