Hello, everyone. Karen from NYC here ... longtime lurker, first-time poster. Thanks to all for the treasure trove of advice I've found on this site!

I am seeking opinions on how my family and I (four adults, two teens) can best travel from Sorrento to Rome.

We will arrive in Sorrento with two cars, and have the option of either returning them there or keeping them, as we have free parking (and the additional rental cost is fairly negligible). We will be leaving Sorrento mid-week to travel to Rome, with the final destination being our apartment in Trastevere. We would either take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples, then switch to the Naples-Rome line, or drive ourselves to FCO and take the FM1 train to Trastevere (to avoid driving in town).

Which Sorrento to Rome option -- car vs. train -- makes the most sense to you with our particular situation? I'm interested in finding the right balance of cost/ease.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I am not sure what extra cost you might generate wuith keeping the cars. You indicated that you have free parking and the extra cost is neglible.
If you have willing drivers you should keep the cars and drive to FCO and take the FM-1 train to trastevere.

It costs about 5 euros to get fromm the circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Naples. It costs about 22 euros to get from Naples train station to Termini.

We did this last summer, travelling with our 2 small children. It was so easy getting a driver to take us to the train statio in Naples from our hotel in Sorrento. We took the fastesst train up to Rome and then got a ride to the hotel. We had no stress and a great vacation.

For an airport return coming from the south, maybe it's better to return it to Ciampino airport. With this many people, for the convenience, you might as well take two taxis rather than public transportation, at a set fare of €30 per cab from Ciampino to within the Aurelian Walls, which includes most of historic Trastevere.
