My wife and I are just starting to plan our 25th anniversary trip to Italy in September of 2007. We have never been to Europe, so this will be our first trip abroad. We are planning on spending 10-12 days in Italy and would appreciate any train travel, places that are a must see, hotel/lodgeing and restaurant recommendations. We are not looking at staying at chain hotels in major cities, but rather staying outside the cities and taking the train in to see the sights. Renting a car is also a possibility.
We don't plan on seeing every museum in Italy but would like to visit a few. I am more interested on small restaruants and wines. My wife is interested in some clothes shopping and culture.
I know i'm probably leaving a bunch of information out, so if you have questions please ask. If you can recommend any books on Italy I must have or web sites I must visit, please do.
There is a great deal of information about Italy on this Web site. There are all the sections listed above the Italy forum; there are trip reports; there are travel notes.
Perhaps you could start with something more basic. Both www.fodors.com and www.frommers.com have destination guides to Italian regions and cities.
Borrow some picture books about Italy from the library. Look at the richly illustrated Eyewitness guidebooks to Italy.
When you have some idea of what interests you in particular, the many knowledgeable people here will happily answer more specific questions.
