Ciao everyone,
We're starting to think about what the weather is likely to be May 3-26 in various places between Rome and Venice, including some days near Todi towards the end of our stay. We're valiantly/crazily hoping each to bring just one carry-on (Lufthansa-limited to 18 lb. and relatively small dimensions); we're not very dressy sorts; and so we're seeking your thoughts about how warm/cold it's likely to be. (I'm guessing it might be a few degrees warmer than my home town, Vancouver, but not too different--does that sound about right?) So is a jean-jacket or a lambswool cardigan going to be enough warmth? Thanks as ever for your sage advice!

We just had a similar question here

This should give you a starting point, and I'm sure others will jump in.

My answer to your question-- based on our time in the same area last May-- is that you'll be fine with the jean jacket and sweater.

You might even want to wear a light T under your sweater. Cool at night and in the morning, but the middle of the day can get warm...or steamy depending on the rain/sun/crowds. We nearly roasted our chestnuts sitting on the spanish steps in March.

We did a trip in May several years ago much like the one you are describing. We each limited ourselves to a wheeled carry-on bag and a small hand-held bag. We had no problems whatsoever, and were thankful that we chose to travel light. We ended up buying a nylon duffel bag in Venice before we flew home to hold our dirty clothes so we could safely pack our souvenirs in our sturdier suitcase. We checked it at the airport and were none the worse. I've packed that same nylon duffel for each trip since, and our little system has worked like a charm. Also, I think you'll be fine with your jean jacket and cardigan. It will come in handy for those places that require a covered shoulder, as well as the chilly nights you may encounter. Enjoy your trip, it's a beautiful time of year in Italy..

EXCELLENT! I have been trying to assuage the huge anxieties of my family about taking only carry-ons; now, with your authority, the discussion is closed. THANK YOU! April Fool
