I thought I would post our itinerary just in case we've made some glaring errors or if anyone has any helpful comments.

June 2 arrive FCO, drive to L'Aquila-- 3 nights, Hotel Dimora Sole

June 5--Ascoli Piceno, 2 nights, Albergo Piceno

June 7--Viterbo 1 week, VRBO rental house, with language school

June 14--Perugia, 5 nights, Hotel Fortuna

June 19--Genoa, 3 nights, City Hotel

June 22--Acqui Terme, 1 week, Baur B&B

June 29-- my husband leaves and I will return to Acqui and stay in a little (cheaper) B&B in town, 6 nights

July 5--pick up friend at MXP, train to Venice, 1 week, Corte Tiepolo apartment

July 12 fly home from Venice.

My excitement is in full swing but it's not yet getting to the point where I want to cancel the whole trip, if you know what I mean. Who knows, maybe I won't get to that stage this time.

Comments?

Thanks,
jan

Hi Jan,
Looks like we won't cross paths but will sure be thinking of you under that same old Italian sun (and moon). We do plan to meet Vicki in Rome for dinner June 13 (our last night)maybe even at the secret taverna. Any chance you could meet us then too? I'll have a cell phone and will give you the number before leaving.

Re: extreme excitement . .yes, I may be getting to that ridiculous point . . of almost thinking what the hell's the point . .just have to come back anyway so why spend the time, energy and $$?? Is that what you mean???!!! of course we do know the answer . .

Will call you before I leave (May 29). Hope your six weeks are beyond glorious . . hope they are stupendous in every way!

Well, jan, I would be writing in green myself, except for the fact that we do get to take a trip to Italy ourselves during that time you'll be gone. Maybe I'll just put ! 6 weeks ! in green Happy Happy.

Seriously, your itinerary looks wonderful; I think that the closest I will get to you is that we will be in Rome while you are in Perugia, then you head north and we head south.
Another time, another trip, perhaps.

Here's an idea, why don't we all just meet in Puglia some summer, based on colleenk's post?
Hmmm . . .

Jan - that looks great! What I wouldn't do for six weeks of vacation! I guess I'll have to settle for three.

I'll try and do lots of research in Acqui Terme and Genoa on a couple of weeks for you.

Wow, Jan, that itin looks fantastic! I'm really envious. Will you be able to blog while you're traveling (I'm living vicariously through other people's trips!)

I don't know if this is of any use to you, but I was in Perugia for a week at about that same time in June last year as you are planning, and was amazed at how hot and humid it was -- in fact, it was that way during my entire 3 weeks in Umbria.

It was wonderful, made it very easy to dress (cotton and sandals all day every day!) and I was extremely glad the Hotel Fortuna has great air-conditioning. I guess I was a bit surprised at the heat, because I thought a mountainous area like Umbria would be more moderate, like the Rocky Mountains can be in summer (quite cool at night.)

Have a wonderful trip!

The only defect in the itinerary is not enough time in Ascoli! Wink Grin Looking forward to meeting you, Jan.

Jan, what a wonderful intinerary! Lucky you to get to go to Ascoli Piceno. Someday, I will get to Le Marche.

Ahh, the days of six week trips to Italy. I had to cut mine down to three the past few years due to the euro, but my trip this summer is going to be extra special, especially since I will be meeting you!! Lucky me! For those that don't know, Jan & I are staying in the same little B&B in Acqui at the same time. I can't wait!!

Thanks Jerry! I expect details!

Sandra--the air conditioning is part of what helped make our decision on the Fortuna. I am OK with hot and humid (I live in Florida, after all) but my husband really hates to be hot, inside. When we were in Umbria, around the same time, in 2004, we were cold! But we were out in the country side near Todi then.

Marcia--Someday...

Valerie--I really agree. I went back and forth so many times between the week in Viterbo and just staying in Ascoli but the new horizon of northern Lazio won out.

Susan! Hurray for us!

Everyone else--thanks for the votes of confidence. I will try to blog so you can enjoy it all with me. Believe me I know what it's like from this end, being the one NOT going--at least we have the cheap thrills from travelers on ST.

Ciao, tutti,
jan

Wow Jan what an amazing trip! Brava for all that great planning. Thumbs Up I'm not sure which part I'm most envious of; the total time spent in Italy, the time spent with Diana at her amazing B&B, a week in a language school in a new location or visiting the Marche area and getting to meet Valerie (high on my list for my next trip with my husband)! I'm sure it will be wonderful and will be here before you know it.

Happy You made me feel very human when you revealed this phenomenon, Jan. I experienced that same feeling before my first trip to Italy, and now that I am exactly one week out from my sophomore departure, my excitement has been interupted by it's sporadic return. At least this time, I can squash that internal nonsense as soon as I recognize that it's messing with my joy.

That all said, your itinerary looks wondrous in true Slow Travel fashion. I look forward to your reviews and reports after your return. Buon viaggio! Dorky Traveler

That's a neat trick! Sometimes it works for me just remembering that I always get like this and sometimes the unease persists. We are in good company. Even Pauline admits to this "phenomenon".

Robert--we will rent a car right away at FCO. I will return it at the end, at MXP when I meet my friend and we train to Venice. Really hoping for a deisel. We are renting the other apt. I think it's the Tiepolo.

Jane--That's the beauty of the GTG, isn't it.
