Have you stayed in a perfect (centrally located, close to main roads, charming) village for exploring central Tuscany and Umbria generally from Florence to Spoleto? Have you rented a perfect (charming, clean, spacious, outside dining area, $80-$100 night) apartment there? Two couples (we'll stay two weeks in each location, they'll stay only one) plan to go next year in May/June, so two one bedrooms would work. Thanks for your help!

My usual candidate is Bevagna, but many places have been discussed in detail, sometimes in very great detail. Start with the "search" link at the top center of any one of these pages.

Take a look at the vacation rental reviews in the main part of the Slowtrav website for some rental suggestions. As for location, perhaps one of the towns close to the Umbria/Tuscany border would suit you. Monte San Savino, Montepulciano, Sarteano, Cetona, Paciano, Panicale, the Orvieto area...

That house in Ranciano looks like remarkably good value. How was it? It looks pretty simple from the photos, but the absence of satellite tv or dishwasher doesn't worry me at all in a holiday home. Apologies if you've already sent in a report, but a quick search hasn't turned one up.

... but we certainly needed all the guy ropes to hold the tent steady. And this was in the middle of August, in this very strange summer that seems to be coming to an end. And we had to go and buy a duvet: the nights under canvas nr Montefortino (see Danny's post in the Conero thread) were colder than I've known them in an Italian August. So we cut our stay in Marche short, and moved over the mountains to (much warmer, but, eventually, wetter) Bevagna. And Provence, 2 days later, was just as wet.

Ranciano

This rental house is basic, with simple facilities and a homely feel. It's best descroibed as being Paul's home away from home, whit books, maps, brochures left by him or by previous tenants. It's a place with personality, not like a motel or clean white expensive rental house, and either you like the personality or you don't. We liked it. We wanted somewhere as a base for visiting Umbria and Tuscany, and wanted to cook our own simple meals with the wonderful local products we picked up on our driving tours.

The house is one of a set of 5 houses built together a short distance from a frazione of a dozen or so houses a couple of kilometers from San Fatucchio. San Fatucchio is 5 minutes drive from Castiglione del Lago. There is a shortcut from Ranciano direct to Cast. del Lago. To stay at Ranciano you'll need a car. Ranciano is extremely well placed to reach across the Tuscan border to Badia, Pozuolo, Montipulciano (30min), Montefollonico, Montalcino and beyond. Reaching Places in Umbria there are two ways. One, the internal way, via yellow roads and many
intersections and much mapreading, and two the Perugia autostrada, which quickly gets you ti the delights across the Umbrian countryside: Citta' di Castello, Assissi, and on up to Norcia (2hrs).

Sorry about being tardy with my trip report. It's coming.
