We will be making our second trip to Venice and will be celebrating of our 35th anniversary. We have the hotel and a list a mile long of things we want to do, but still need to select a place for a dinner celebration. I am familiar with Chow Venice and can hardly wait to purchase it, but I was hoping to get some special suggestions for that evening. We will be there in June, would like something with lots of atmosphere (I'm sure that won't be hard), good food - not necessarily gourmet and expensive - but really GOOD memorable food. Most of all we hope it will be romantic and not stuffy - maybe something outdoors??? Any suggestions are welcome. I love researching and so appreciate the kindness of those who keep this board so active. It is my first time to write a question here, but have benefitted often from the information I have read here. DeAnn
I'd say if it's more ambiance than gourmet you are after, check out an outdoor table at Bancogiro, overlooking the Grand Canal. It is a gorgeous and romantic spot. You do have to share long tables with others, but they aren't too cramped.
Another place that gets good reviews here is Cantinone Storico. They have a canal setting, good food and it is not too expensive.
Welcome to the board. Fiaschetteria toscana is my favorite restaurant and the food and ine will be quite memorable ndeed. But it will not be romantic. The restaurant is crowded and has quite the bustle.
I would think about alle Testirere. While it is very simple in decor, and also fairly small, the feel is more sedate and the owner/partners will share with you their passion for food and your ahving a good time. One the goof food for the euro scale, alle Testiere delivers.
words of wisdom to live by from Stephen Sondheim's The Frogs {The chorus is singing a prayer to Dionysus...} Dionysius "A hymm to me, the god of wine..." Xanthius (His slave) "I thought you were the god of drama?" Dionysius "I am the god of wine and the god of drama. A little wine will get you thru a lot of drama"

But, you should get reservations well in advance of your arrival in Venice.

There is one table that's sort of like being outside. It's a table for two, and it's right next to a balcony that overlooks a canal. My wife and I sat there when we were in Venice two years ago. It is a romantic table.
It is VERY expensive. The food was incredible, but I really don't think it was worth the price.

Probably pretty pricey, but I've always wanted to go to the Locanda Cipriani out in the lagoon on the island of Torcello. Looks very romantic and you can stay the night.
Fiaschetteria Toscana is also one of my all time favorite restaurants ever, ever, ever anywhere but Romantic it is NOT. I do know a lady, another Fiaschetteria fan, who did one overnight in the Locanda Cipriani as Joanna suggested and she highly recommended it. Very expensive but the dining room at the Gritti Palace is pretty nice and the food is great.
In December we ate at the Bistrot de Venise again, the best we have found in Venezia after a wonderful concert at La Fenice.Great food, expertly served -the astice is a type of lobster, wonderful desserts including a liquer served in a chocolate glass . Atmosphere!! The Bistot is very central, and has a website too.

These are the rating scores for each (10 is best):
Da Fiore: Espresso 7,5 Michelin 8,5 Veronelli 9,5 Accademia 9 Class 8,5
Fiaschetteria Toscana: Espresso 6,5 Michelin 7 Veronelli 7,5 Class 7
My score for each would be the same as the Class score.
Da Fiore is 100 Euros and FT is 70 for dinner without wine. As for the Gritti, enjoy having a late afternoon espresso with a sweet on its veranda which is right on the Grand Canal. I bet the spirit of Katherine Hepburn still lingers there...

P.S. Veronelli, Accademia and Espresso are Italian restaurant guide books. Class is a magazine that publishes its interpretation of these guides' ratings every March. Additionally, the Michelin red guide (as seen above) and the Gambero Rosso restaurant guide are included. The latter is another Italian restaurant guide. Somehow Gambero Rosso's food rating was not included for either. But, Gambero Rosso awarded Da Fiore a 50 and FT a 45 in its 2004 guide. The highest rated restaurants in Italy by GR (of which there were two) were awarded a 56.
