I'd stayed out of this because there are so many possibilities; but no, you don't have to go to the coast then turn back. The easiest one I remember is Train to Arezzo, bus from there.

Bill is right...there are buses from Arezzo and Sansepolcro over the mountains to Le Marche. Having driven it last year, I am not sure that you will save much time but I haven't been able to find the right schedule yet. Perhaps a call to the APT in Arezzo or Urbino would help.....

To add specifics to that last, the line from Arezzo to Urbino is the omnipresent Bucci. There are also at least two regular daily lines from Perugia; there are also long-distance carriers on non-daily schedules. This page summarizes those three possibilities and links to each of the companies. The operative websearch is almost always Place X Place Y orari (better than X Y pullman, which has been spammed out of usefulness by the so-called web portals, domain name squatters, etc.).

Here is a new website (to me)..... italybus.it I plunked in Arezzo and Urbino and it returned two possibilities each way. The companies are Baschetti and Bucci. Hope it works out..but the there aren't too many options. http://www.italybus.it/

With the two Perugia possibilities, you're up to 4. There are also buses from Florence to Gubbio on Sulga, and Gubbio to Urbino; less direct but still better than Pesaro: train to Spoleto, bus Spoleto to Urbino; and quite a few others. It's all a matter of research. Gosh it would be nice if the bus companies got together to issue a consolidated schedule book, especially since many don't compete, providing different parts of the route.

It is nice to have all these possibilities, but I am not sure that anyone of them is an improvement over the train to Pesaro, connecting to the bus to Urbino....in terms of time or convenience. Fastest Train to Pesaro -- 2:45 Bus to Urbino from Pesaro -- :55 The shorter bus schedule from Arezzo to Urbino was 2:45 and there weren't too many options.

Chandi.. your best bet would be to get a cheap rental car!!! and get the most out of the trip. We just went to le Marche in June... was incredible! I'm sure it can be a business writeoff for you! Many of the car rental places have a 3 days for the price of 2.. pick up friday and bring back Sunday... ALso looks like booking online gets you some great deals, look up Robert Rainey's link.. or PM him

Just one more thing...if a car is an option, I am with Diva; it makes the whole trip more convenient. And you get to see some beautiful countryside on the way and on the way back..... If you went directly taking the fastest route, it should be less than three hours of driving.

I don't know yet if a car will be an option. I am going to look into prices today. It won't be a business expense as the trip has nothing to do with my business, but it sure would be more convenient. The bus thing looks a bit faticoso!

Hi, Just got back from Urbino this morning. We ended up with a rental car. We found a place here in Florence that we'd not known of before that has cheaper prices than AutoEurope which is what we usually use. It is called SIXT. Here is the site for it: http://www.e-sixt.com/It took exactly 3 hours to drive from Florence to Urbino via Arezzo and Sansepolcro. After leaving Sansepolcro, you go up over this big mountain which is very pretty. Le Marche was quite green and it rained every afternoon, which was such a relief after Florence!!
