I will be traveling from the Colosseum area to the Vatican. Which is the easiest way to get there, bus or metro? From looking at the metro maps, it appears I'll have to switch from one line to the other - is that right? Usually we'd just take a cab, but I'm trying to keep certain costs to a minimum this time around.

Thanks!

Yes, the metro would call for a change at Termini. I'm not sure of a bus that would go all the way without a change: I find the 87 to Piazza Cavour, which isn't that much of a walk from the Vatican.

I have taken the Metro from the Colosseum yot the vatican. I had an Apt by the Colosseo Metro stop.
You get on the Colosseo metro Stop (metro B line) going in in the driectin of Rebibbia (towards Termini). Termini is 2 stops down the line from Colosseo. At Termini you get on Metro A going in the direction of Battista. I got off at the Ottaviano stop.

You can take bus 81 from the backside of the Colosseum on Via Vibenna to Piazza
Bus 81 south half by the Colosseum (in back on Via Vibenna)

north half by the vatican

It goes to Piazza Risorgimento by the Vatican Museusm. You can see the Ottaviano Metro stop on the north half transit map.

Thanks for your suggestions. I went on to the website for Rome's bus/metro system. I found the #40 bus that leaves from the Nationale/Quirnale stop and goes right to St. Peter's. This should work perfectly.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

My wife and I stayed near Termini and we took the bus when going to the Vatican. The bus used to stop at Piazza Venezia so maybe that is an option if you are close by. Here is my Rome trip report with pictures by the way http://gardkarlsen.com/rome_italy.htm . Maybe you can find some useful info there. Get in touch if you have any questions :-)

Nancy, if you're thinking of going from the Colosseum to Nazionale/Quirinale to catch the bus, I'm not quite sure of it, but I think that's a climb. You may be better off catching the bus at Piazza Venezia, either walking by the Forum or taking one of the many buses that go that route; there shouldn't be much of a wait.

Andrew, I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at the map. I'm totally unfamiliar with the area around the Colosseum - we didn't make it over there the last (and only) time I was in Rome. I guess I'll just wing it when we get there. We're staying at the Nicolas Inn which is right across from the Forum basically. I can ask the owners of our hotel what the best way is. If I'm feeling generous, I'll just take a cab, esp since the Euro is coming back down to earth. At least the last I checked it wasn't bad. Smile

Here is what the ATAC Route calculation says when I put in Piazza del Colosseo 1 as the start and Piazza San Pietro 1 as the destination.

Departure from piazza del colosseo,1

walk 150 metres

go to stop COLOSSEO/SALVI

take Line No 87 (P.ZA CAVOUR) to 5 stops 87 ogni 20 min.

get off at stop ARGENTINA

take Line No 40 (P.ZA PIA/CASTEL S. ANGELO) to 3 stops 40 ogni 8 min.

get off at stop TRASPONTINA/CONCILIAZIONE

walk 450 metres

to piazza san pietro,1

The Quirinale is not close to the Colosseum and yes it is a climb uphill to get there. When I was staying at an apartment near the Cavour metro stop , we visted the trevi fountain at night. We made a wrong turn on the way back and ended up by the Quirinale on our way back. on my map as the bird flies is is almost a km (900 meters) from the front side of the Colosseum to the Quirinale.
